Did anyone see this article in Aug/Sep 2014 Mother Earth News?

What I took from their response to a letter was Mother telling readers to lobby for pick-ups and the like to be regulated using the same rules and MPG restrictions as passenger cars.

I don't get it. Most of the advertisers in the magazine need a large vehicle to move their tractor, attachment or similar heavy equipment. Why would Mother encourage large price increases and performance decreases in the vehicles required for their advertisers to sell their products?

Is Mother moving so much into the urban market they are forgetting the homesteader and small farmer? Does their staff only write, so they don't know what it takes to farm?

Just don't get it.

Not trying to be flip, but I'm guessing it's for the same reason they want to reduce exhaust emissions and fossil fuel consumption in passenger cars.

Gas Guzzlers of today burn about 1/3 of the fuel the same sized gas guzzler did 30 years ago. For somebody driving 5-10 thousand miles a year it doesn't amount to much.
It's also sometimes cheaper and has less environmental impact.to have one multi purpose gas guzzler instead of two vehicles.

They have gone out of business before- This could be another case of forgetting who their readers are.

Threepoint

I'm not concerned that some think we should reduce emissions (have a VA alliterative fuels tag), the opinion is valid. I don't think it's a good opinion to officially express for a commercial activity that seems to speak for its readers and advertisers. I wouldn't expect Wired to lobby for state sales taxes on internet purchases, or Daily Kos to push for school vouchers for example.

You don't get that a predominantly left-wing magazine is calling for restrictions on gas guzzling pickup trucks, the station wagon of the last two decades?

I stopped reading it in the early 80's when it was too left for my hippy-like beliefs. That's how left it is.

Personally, if they made a vehicle that could perform the same tasks as my 2500HD and got 50 mpg I would be all over it. I don't want to get poor gas mileage, but I have tasks that need to be done, and this truck does them all. I subscribe to Mother Earth, but rarely even look at it.

Mother Earth News is often out of contact with their readers. For the magazine to teach is one thing, however they have shown that they like to preach while asking for your money.
