There's a closed thread in this forum that discusses testing welds on coupons heavier than the welder's rating. Further comments covered trailer failures, losing coupons from the bed of the pickup and a weld coupon never killed anyone.

A couple of weeks ago, we had a sheriff's deputy and his wife killed when they were struck by a trailer on the open road while riding their motorcycle in central Kansas. Their two children were riding with other family members and witnessed the incident. Kansas Highway Patrol has seized the trailer for inspection of defects. Not sure if the trailer is factory built or home made, will update when I know more.

I cannot wait to read the comments this thread generates

from what I have read, the trailer was a homemade, 4x6 trailer pulling a lawnmower. The trailer came unhitched from the truck. The trailer and ball where confiscated for testing. Article didnt say if the trailer had any safety chains, nor did it say what caused the trailer to become unhitched.

article also went on to say that there had been 534 detached trailer accidents in Kansas since 2010, 15 of those accident resulted in 21 deaths.

By definition, it should be the duties fault. It's called proper follow distance. You should be far enough back that if the vehicle in front suddenly stops, you can stop with out hitting. Now, if trailer is traveling forward with tow vehicle, momentum will keep it going forwards even if it releases. Bottom line cop died; cops fault. If anyone should have know not to tail gate it should have been a cop...

Not necessarily true if they were traveling near each other on a two lane highway.

Did I miss something? I thought the deputy was traveling in the opposite direction? Oh wait, every one just makes this stuff up as they see fit.

There is not enough information. .....for any comments.

The lawyer should sue who is clearly at fault in this case....manufacturers of 120v welders. :stirthepot:

Not that the subject of someones death is funny but your post certainly is considering the context.

From the linked article:
The group of motorcyclists was traveling westbound on 10th Street, a four lane street, when a trailer came loose from an eastbound pickup truck. The trailer crossed over and struck the motorcycle holding the Kansas couple.
100% the fault of the guy with the trailer.
