Hot climate hood vent-Ford F550

We did this to improve A/C, cooling and battery life. A/C improved a lot. Too soon to tell on batteries.
Truck idles a lot.
Anybody else try this? This was the cheapest way I could think of with no body work.

If that doesn't work, you can always add a "camper style" power roof vent.

I have always just pulled the seal out and if that was not enough shim the hinge with washers to raise the rear of the hood a bit. In the great white north I do it to keep the windshield wiper area free from ice and snow. Works good to about 20 below then nothing helps on the plow trucks other than a warm garage. Used to shim the hoods on the drag cars to help with cooling. CJ

I got the boat scupper idea from the van style ambulances I had seen it done on.
Form follows function, but I guess in this case maybe not. Lower profile might look better, but I could not find any.

I have seen K9 CHP Crown Vic's in Southern California, Palm Springs area, with louvered hoods. They had to, to keep the car cool in 118F temps, running AC to keep K9 dogs cool. Looked pretty cool too, old hot-rod style.

have you had the washer nozzles/hoses melt yet? Had mine idling in near Houston and it melted the hoses off the hood!

No we have not, but we have put these on all the trucks except on. No battery failures and the a/c works better at idle.
Also, all that under hood heat can't help the other accessories and engine components. we can install the scuppers in less than 30 minutes. Run Cool Hood Louvers are nice, but are more involved to install and are relatively expensive for what they are.
I will post a picture of some we installed on a Dodge 3500 when I have a chance.

what color is your hood? Black is really hot compared to white...

Good looking job!! It gets to the point, on the cheep ! ! ! !:laughing: If that doesn't quite do the job, try putting on 2 more and see what happens. Putting louvers into the hood is VERY costly the last time I checked into it. :2cents:

If you need more air flow take another page from the marine world and put in a 12v bilge blower like this. They really move the CFM's. You can even get fancy and put in a relay so it's only powered when the vehicle is on and a thermostat to control it for a predetermined under hood temperature.
