This post doesn't really fit anywhere so move it if you'd like. The first loads of new crop corn came in to my local grain elevator today. 20% moisture. It came came from the Ohio River Bottoms near Stephensport Ky, Mine is still a bit wet, high 20's on moisture. But soon the big red combine will be chewing up the world.

My grapes ripened last week and I had to pick them as they started falling. Last of the tomatoes are gone. Beans are too big to pick, but many in the freezer! :licking:

The corn around here is still green and just starting to turn so it will be a while. The soybeans are about the same, I've seen one field that is starting to turn but the soybeans on my place don't seem close to turning.

Corn here is turning so are soybeans. Have seen both corn and beans harvested about 30 min away. Don't think anyone close has started but I haven't talked to anyone either. So I don't know yields either.

The potato harvest is getting into full swing up this way... they've been harvesting grain for several weeks now.
I don't know what the summer's been like in other places, but we've actually had a sunny growing season for a change here.

Even on a normal year we have a month to go yet.....Seeding was a month late and june was cold and nothing really grew , Scary if the crop will be ready in time this year even though yield has potential . Most winter wheat is off but nothing else is done ( no spring seeded crops) rape is being swathed now . We have 2000 acres to combine this year and we wont start for at least a week yet.

This is a dumb question for most of you, but I am curious. Do farmers harvest corn used for human food sooner than corn used for animal feed? There is some corn around here (Missouri) that seems to be well past harvest time but I have been told its animal feed corn that needs to fully dry out before harvested.

Thanks.

Yes and No. The food grade grain can be more finicky than animal feeds. If it's too dry it can be damaged during harvest. If too wet it can have issues with afilotoxins if not dried right. Animals can handle more afilotoxins (sp) than humans. And grain is usually cracked or ground for animals so cracking isn't an issue. Food grade is worth more so if needed more can be spent to dry it.

The most finicky grain I have seen is popcorn. As you can imagine you can have issues if you try to run it through a dryer. It has to be close enough to finish drying with just air.
