Licence plate

Quebec needs a plate for ANY vehicle that drives on a road! + triangle for SMV!
Also stop lights, running lights and fenders.
Even off road vehicles need a 'P' plate.
For that reason bull dozers all sport 'P' plates.
A tractor that is used on the road to snow blow private drives must have W plates ($$$).
Chains and studs over 3000 kilos not permitted.

By definition all self propelled vehicles that can carry a person must be plated, the farce being that that would include riding mowers.

Not to start any cross border "stuff" but why? None of that is done down here, and somehow we seem to get along without plates on our tractors, and off road vehicles, and bulldozers, and lawn equipment.. Is it just the money?

One of my other sources says that Colorado and Michigan require plates on some heavy equipment. Yes it is just about the money.

Lived in Michigan all my life and this is news to me!

I live in rural farm country where it is necessary (not complaining) to yield to farm equipment that is as wide as the county roads are. I've seen nothing but the slow moving vehicle triangle displayed.

I don't really know. Someone PM'd me and said Michigan and Colorado, require plates on some eqpt. I have never seen a plate on anything down here except vehicles that normally travel on roads. And farm tractor's don't require a plate even if they do travel on roads everyday.

License plate on a tractor or do you mean triangle? In NY we don't need to license our tractors but if Canada is getting away with it New York could follow. NY has never met a fee they didn't like.

OMG, Someone please close this thread before some NY politician downstate reads it and makes another law.

As the New York politicians tell their citizens, "Squeal like a pig."

That is my take. (It is the law, you know!)

Also being, motor vehicles, ATV's and snow sleds need to be plated. (motor vehicle that can transport a person)
But since we have no fault insurance here all 'motor vehicles' not on public roads have to carry specialized insurance appropriate to the activity.
Example: My Honda TRX 350 costs about $65./yr to be able to use it and that is only on trails with sizable fines if caught circulating on a public road.
Policeing of ATV,s and snow sleds has been delegated to the various clubs that own or operate the trails.
Helmets are also mandatory.

Then you have bicycles that have no plates, wear no helmets and have no insurance coverage using very costly lanes and never respect signage (blow all stops and cross intersections any which way). A law is now in effect that carries serious fines if you 'door' a bike that is unlit at night.
Using a cell phone in a car =$$$ and points but texting on a bike is OK as well as wearing earphones to hear music.

Not a cash grab, it is for our protection!

Once I clocked a skate board going downhill doing about 30 KPH while texting! (without a helmet)
