A question I have concerning the torque requirements.It seems the broom manufacturers torque spec of around 1000-1100 in lbs for a motor mounted on the broom shaft directly,running at 125-200rpm is what most all use for a 4-5 ft broom.Would this torque spec change on the 540rpm shaft that runs the 4:1 reduction chain drive in my setup?

So it would shaft drive a 5' rotary broom. You're wanting to drive a 4' broom, but hydraulically, plus a 24V alternator that can possbily pull 2hp? Given hydraulic inefficiencies, you're going to be cutting it close with a 20hp engine.

Also, you haven't mentioned a hydraulic reservoir. You'll need a couple gallon reservoir and possibly some way to cool it. A hydraulic filter, too.

A 20 HP Kohler can turn a pump at 20 GPM at 1800 psi.

He probably will not be using the sweeper and the alternator at the same time.

I believe that you would reduce the required torque by the same ratio or you wou need 250 - 275 in lbs. Lower speeed = higher torque same as using a 4:1 gear reducer

for reference: 1100 in lbs at 150 RPM = 2.6 HP

You're warm blooded, J_J... :)

He's planning on using the broom to sweep snow and the alternator to power an electric heater at the same time. ;)

Making some headway on this project.I borrowed a laser tach and measured the PTO output shaft @ 2306 RPM.The tach was one of those $15 cheapies from ebay and seemed to work well.The shaft speed is similar to my Kubota GR which I measured @ 2664 when I hooked an alt drive to it. So,according to the GPM graph it should pump close to 12 GPM with the 1.19 cu in vane pump. Ordered a 4.5 cu in motor off ebay and got it mounted up.Couldn't find an appropriate adapter to mate to the 7/8 hex shaft so I used a 1" lovejoy coupling and welded the coupling half to it.Will have the pump,motor spool valve,foot mount for the pump and tank accessories from SC tomorrow.

Hope the muffler clamps hold.I could add a 3rd one if it slips any.

Locknut,
Did you check the Vane pumps rated RPM? I believe you will be OK but you will have to watch your inlet condition at the higher RPM's especially when the oil is cold.

Nice!
Any plans for a hydraulic reservoir and filter?

Yea,been thinking how large and what shape and so on,but I'm working on mounting the pump right now.Had to saw and grind the old gearbox mounts off to have a spot to mount the foot bracket for the pump so I can get an elevation point on the inlet.Then I'll figure how high the bottom of the tank needs to be.I assume the inlet hose needs to be running uphill to the tank,or at least level. I asked my hydraulics guy about a filter and he said it may not be needed.I'm going to get everything fabbed and mounted,then take it to his shop so he can plumb it all up.I'm also going to mount the cab and get the alternator platform fabbed up before I take it in.It'll take me a while,but they are super busy with the farmers right now anyway.

On the reservoir issue,most things I've read indicate a large tank.I don't know where I'd put it.Say,if I go with a small 2-gal tank and a cooler like this;

10418R1 New Universal RTF Industrial Oil Cooler Kit 18 x 9 x 1 1 2 200 PSI | eBay

would this be workable to dissipate the heat?
