Well I'm finally on my 4 acres over a year now and decided I could use a small tractor for odds and ends, landscaping, mild brush hogging, snow (not much). I've got about 2.5 acres in mowing which I handle with my 60" Badboy...handles it fine and quick, although its a pain on slopes. The remaining 1.5 acres are partially wooded and needs brush clearing and brush hogging. After its cleared and graded it will join the other property so I will end up with 4 acres of mowing/hogging. I think I'll have a dozer in first to clear some overgrown stuff and ugly and dead trees.

I've priced new; 1025R FEL, MMM, Box blade...over $17000 (never really pinned it down with the dealer).
Couple of ads locally; 1026R FEL MMM with 53 hours, 90% mowing.......$12000
2000 4200 HST, FEL, Blade 5' brush hog, 193 hours....$11500.
I've even entertained the thought of a bigger, older tractor for a year or so to do the clearing and then selling and adding another mower to my Badboy. Not much in the bigger tractors showing up in local listings. Thoughts?

I can see the larger 4200 a better fit initially when I'm clearing but wonder if it will be too big to mow with later. The 1026R is tempting and might be able to get that down another $500. Just wondering if it will be big enough to do the clearing without tearing it up. Any comments on the prices I'm looking at or the values of the used units? Thanks.

Did get a number from the JD dealer on the 1025R, FEL, H120 loader, 60" deck...$16500 + $200 finance fees, optional $300 insurance. I'm assuming another $1000 tax on top of that. So we get up to 18000 OTD.

The used 1026R is really tempting at a 6000 savings (hard to give up that 0% for 60 months though).

The 4200 is a big tractor but looks like a lot of tractor and gear for the money. I'm going to see both this week and see how I feel about both.

Is there anything on the used 1026R I should look out for? Have they been solid machines? Recalls? Thanks.

Three years ago I bought a new 1026R for the same purposes as you. My thought was that I'd love it and keep it forever, so I didn't want to be stuck mowing with a large tractor once my chores were done. Two weeks ago I picked up a '03 4310, and I REALLY love it now more than the '11 R, it's easily three times the tractor, and I'd just deal with mowing with it. I wish I'd have just bought the larger one sooner. However, one series AutoConnect decks are absolutely priceless!

On a used 'R, look for an extended oil fill cap (product improvement program), water in the hydraulic oil, and floppy and droopy bucket (updated SCV available). I wouldn't sell my 200 hr 'R for $15k, so I think you're looking at a pretty sweet deal!

I appreciate the feedback. I'm really leaning toward the 4200 as I'm trying to imagine what I want to do with it. Brushhog , general chores, landscaping, auger post hole and tree digging. Seems a lot to ask of the 1026R. I also question whether I need a belly mower (as great as the quick connect is) as I don't see getting rid of the Badboy (brand new). I think the smarter move would be to use the brushhog as long as needed on the rough ground and tame it. Then maybe go to a 72" rear mower later for the 4200. Gives me something big to mow the field areas while I use the Badboy around the house.

Thanks for the Pics...good perspective! In the end I think both of these deals are pretty good...the 1026R is a situation where the guy is moving and can not take it with him. The 4200? I think he may have gone bigger. I'll see both this week.

I'd go with the 1026R if you are going to primarily mow later. You can rent equipment for the short term stuff.

The 1026R has more torque and power than the 1025, and no DPF (exhaust filter), and it uses less fuel. It is an EPA Tier 3 certified engine, the 1025 is EPA Tier 4.

The 1026R is like a .30-06 caliber is to big game rifles - it doesn't do any one thing particularly well, but it does everything good enough. If you can 'only' afford one tractor like me.

The quick-connect deck is really nice as you get older like me.

Good luck!

Sorry, but the 1025r is virtually the same machine as the 1026r, they (JD) derated and rebadged it to fall under the Teir4 25hp guidelines, there is no DPF or the need for DEF on either.

Deere:
1026R. Yanmar 3TNV76 25.2
1025R. Yanmar 3TNV80 24.5
4200. Yanmar 3TNE78 26.3
Coincidence? I think not!

kennyd, thanks, but my dealer told me the 1025r had a DPF, that is where I got my information and one of the reasons I bought the last model year 1026R while it was still available. That's all I know. If my dealer does not have the facts, then that is not good!

Well been getting some test drives in. The 1026R was nice...but...no quick connect deck...ughhh! After being on it I just realized what it does best is mow...and I have a 60" zt that does more than I need. I've since looked at, in no order;

Mahindra Max 28XL....older lot model with a pink loader. Pretty agreeable size tractor and Tier 3. The Tier 4 is coming in a redesign. Now that was $14500...tractor and loader, which seems like a decent amount of tractor.
JD 3032 seems a bit big and expensive for what I need. The JD dealer told me they get a fair number of the 1 series traded in on this unit.
Kubota BX 2670..........3000 more than the used 1026R, but 1500 less than the new 1025R. Not a fan of the hydro pedel.

Kioti Ck2510 is a nice unit and priced at a bit over 15200...there's a new old stock CK20HST that is 13000.
Seems to me the sweet spot for tractor for my eye is around 2000 lbs. The Mahindra falls there as well as the Kioti's.

The last one I want to see is the LS XJ2025H that is on the way to the local LS dealer. $13000 tractor loader. Lighter at 1600 lbs...but couple grand less than the Mahindra and Kioti.

Finally the used JD 4200 sits up north waiting for me to come take a look. Guy is really ready to sell and if I can get that Tractor, blade and brush hog in the 10,500-11000 range I'd be happy...just have to go look.

Tonight a guy touched base with me...has a 96 JD 955 with loader and blade for $8000 firm...700 hours. Unseen as of yet. IS that a good buy assuming its in good shape?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I mow my yard with a 4310 and a 72" deck. Just the right size for me.
