OK, my 2800 has both 540 and 1000 rpm for the pto. What should I use the 1000 rpm for, if anything?

Use it for implements that require 1000 rpm pto. I pull a twenty foot flexwing mower with my JD 4440. That is what the mower requires.

I had read an earlier thread where someone said they use the 1000rpm pto at 1400 engine rpm which makes the pto speed about 540. He claimed to use it with his snow blower, brush hog, tiller, and most other attachments, and claimed it makes it use less fuel. Seemed to make sense but I don't want to screw up my new tractor if he wasn't correct.

Snow thrown from a 1000 PTO snowblower is a sight! Not sure you would get enough snow in GA to justify that kind of machine though.......:)

I guess I don't know much about your tractor. On my 4440, there are two interchangeable shafts that can be inserted into the tractor. One is for 540 and the other is for 1000. The splines are different on each, so they only work with the like driveline.

It is a Branson 2800, 28 hp. The rear PTO lever shows both 540 and 1000 rpm.

Mine is the same way, one for 540/750 and one for 1000.

For extra speed driving a pump, rototiller, blower, snow thrower maybe. As well as all 1000rpm implements.

The 750 rpm setting is like an eco setting on cars etc. You can use it on 540 RPM equipment but reduce the throttle setting to 72% of 540 setting thus saving fuel on implements that don't require the full power of your engine. It shouldn't be used when say bush hogging in heavy cover that needs the tractors full power as it will likely lug the engine badly. 1000 rpm setting should only be used for 1000 rpm rated equipment as it could permanently damage the equipment or even cause unsafe performance as in the case of a bush hog or other rotating machinery. Doubling the speed would put undue stress on such machinery and could cause parts to fly off at high speed causing severe damage to equipment, injury or even death to an operator or bystander.

As I recall the belt drive on the old JD alphabet series tractors ran at 1000 rpm. Had a neighbor that came over and hooked his to my hammermill and when that popper got everything spinning including a 20' (40 overall) belt it was a sight. Feeding corn stalks into that mill was something. Throw half a dozen into the hopper and it was one big GULP. The popper hardly knew what happened. Neighbor said that there was a lot of energy in the belt. Course it wasn't in the belt, it was that 2000 or whatever pound flywheel spinning doing the work. All the popper did was to keep it spinning.
