I moved into a new house in Dec. 2013. By the time construction was complete, it was too late to start a new lawn. Over the summer the lawn was pretty much overtaken by weeds. I aerated a couple of weeks ago and over seeded. The new grass is coming up but there are plenty of weeds left over. I would like to over spray with 2-4D to kill the broad leafs, but I'm afraid of harming the new grass. Is that a valid concern? How mature does the grass have to be to not worry about adversely affecting it?

You are better off waiting until spring now. New grass is touchy until mowed a few times.

The instructions on the package say not to use it until new grass has been mowed twice. Read section 5, "Ornamental Turf".

Thanks! I guess I should have read the instructions prior to posting. TBN members always have the answers so that's the easy way out. Thanks again.

Like they said...wait until Spring. Also put out pre-emergent early. Both ONLY if you're NOT over seeding in the Spring.

Also, hold off mowing as long as you can...maybe until November. The longer the grass can grow the better. Whatever germinates in the first 14 days is most likely all that will this season.
