Maybe a little OT, how do you sharpen your ax?

A normal hand held belt sander with a rag over the handle and gently held in the vise would work too.

A large, double cut file to take down the nicks and get the bevel right, then a fine cut file to finish shaping followed by a few passes with a red, DMT "stone" frequently dipped in a bucket of water. It's almost sharp enough to shave with when I'm done with it. Light limbing with a sharp axe is one of life's great pleasures.

quick touch up with a hand held grinder .... followed by a fine file ....

but most of the work is done with the 2 chainsaws and a battery sawsall ... seldom use the axe anymore

chainsaws to cut quick . ( second lighter one to free the first if it gets stuck , and for limbing ) the sawsall for the rest , ( quick disconnect for blades if they get stuck, just slip in a new blade and continue ) ... yes , I'm getting lazy in my old age ...

Second picture: you should be using eye protection!

... I use the same file to file nicks on props.

I never had to file nicks on mine. The rocks put them in for me. :)

I've always used a file on an axe.

Angle grinder with flap wheel to get the gouges. Finish with an "axe 61Zd8Dd032L._SL1500_.jpg" file.

I should have stated............file the nicks smooth on the leading edge of airplane props. What model airplane do you have?:confused3:
...................or are you talking about just a boat prop?

Boats. With a plane, you can see the rocks, except when they hide in clouds.

Actually, checking for rock nicks on the prop of an airplane is standard pre-flight. Th eprop can pick up stones from the runway. A friend of mine has 18"of prop break off over Baja California and thought the engine was going to be torn out of the frame. He got it shut down and glided to a safe landing.

Most of the time, just use a file. Flap wheel on grinder works too. Don't need a super fine edge in an axe. The steel is usually too soft to support it.
