Hi all

Have a bathroom sink and replaced the faucet set. Couldn't fix old one because couldn't find parts to fix leak. After new installation the water from that sink
had a smell to it, the other sinks ok. It sort of has that rotten egg smell that , i believe, might be sulfur smell as in some well water . I have city water.
It's only on hot side. Ah, must be in water heater. But only one one hot water faucet smells. what can i do?

My tank has an anodizing rod. Tank comes with a lifetime warranty. They caution owner to replace rod every 5 years or void warranty. The tank is German.
Most plumbers don't know much about it. plumber supply houses don't carry part. Installer doesn't handle tank anymore and he left me high and dry.
I found it on line for $60 and freight, and its a German replacement. I flushed the tank and changed the rod. The smell immediately almost disappeared.
Now it's creeping back, but not near as bad as before. Keeping in mind that no other sink or tub smells, could it be some kind crummy metal in my
new "name brand" faucet.

Any ideas out there?? Cheers.....Coffeeman

My bathroom sink had a bad smell that we could not figure out. After much investigation, we found the smell was coming from the overflow line that connects the overflow to the drain. It was hard to get rid of, but after trying many things it finally went away. Don't remember what we used though.

Try taking the aerator off and trying it just for giggles.. I had the same thing happen to my kitchen sink.. the faucet was new and the aerator was injecting so much air compared to the old one,, It went away after a while..

Are you on well water?

Check your p trap. If dry, it will allow sewer smells to seep up thru drain. If you do not use the sink often or have a leak at the p trap causing it to drain, it will smell.

This makes perfect sense!

Is this sink the one that is closest to the water heater? Sometimes if the water heater isn't hot enough or the water sits in it for too long, a rotten egg smell will begin to occur. Usually turning up the temperature and running the water long enough to get all the "old" water out of the tank will work. I've also been told that if you turn off the water to the tank, then drain it and fill it with vinegar and let it sit overnight, the smell will go away. I just raised the temp on my water heater and ran the tap for an hour to get rid of it when I had it. With the higher temp, I haven't had any issues.

IT,s the new supply lines to the new faucet. Some faucets come with them ,others you buy separate. Go to metal tubing lines and the smell will disappear. Hope that helps. You may not want to believe it so ask a water treatment guy. Its The onjly thing that has changed

Good point about lines. My hot tank is a Buderus. German made and comes with a big anodizing rod made out of magnesium. I guess the magnesium reacts with
water minerals that cause corrosion , rust etc. My thought maybe the rod magnesium might react with something in new spigot. I forgot about the new
supply lines. I don't really know how the rod works. I also think the suggestion hr3 made, about aerator, is worth a shot. My policy is try easiest first. I'll try that tonite.

A magnesium anodizer I believe is unusual in home water tanks. But, I hear magnesium is used in boat hulls to stop or control corrosion. Even in ships, if I
heard right. As I mentioned, it's a mystery to me because rest of water is same old "no smell". I totally agree with you, faucets and supply lines (as you reminded me)
are the only thing changed
