Long 470 DTC
I have purchased a used 62" hydraulic snow blower to mount on the front of my 45 Hp tractor. I am trying to build a PTO driven hydraulic power pack to run the snow blower that will be mounted on a 3 three point hitch frame. I purchased a new 20 gpm at 3000 rpm pump to run this unit that needs to run at +/- 2000 rpm. I had a 4:1 gear box that I planned on using to run off my 540 rpm pto to run the pump, but just found out that it will not work to increase rpm, only reduce rpm. I have been looking for a used +/- 4:1 gear box to do the job with no luck. If I could find a reasonably priced 2:1 gearbox that can handle the workload, I could exchange the pump for one that can deliver the output and pressure at 1000 rpm. Any suggestions or feedback would be most appreciated. Thank you. Thom

Buy a PTO pump, It includes the gears internally to increase speed. Prince, Dynamic, Bailey and a few others offer them. From memory one is rated at 21 GPM. Keep your pressures down with more flow for longer life with the gear type hydraulics. A large gear pump running at 3000RPM is not a good idea. Most bigger pumps are rated at 2400RPM max. CJ

Greetings;

I have been told by the snow blower manufacturer that a 2000 psi pump will not work well in heavy snow loads and if I want the best performance from this implement that I need a 3000 psi capacity pump. With no experience in this area I am trying not to make a mistake that will cause more work along with additional cost and aggravation when I need the snow blower the worst. Thank you very much for your feedback. Thom

Thom,
Not sure if you realize this but 20 GPM @ 3000 requires around 40 HP input. Do you have the specifications on the blower showing what flow and pressure is required to operate it?

Some people have driven hydraulic pumps off the front of the engine using a mechanical shaft connected to the end of the main crankshaft pulley but these guys had machinist skills. There is always the problem of where to store the oil you will need as the reservoir needs to be big enough to dissipate the heat generated. People have also up driven pumps off the pto using sprockets and chain to get higher speeds. I think you are going to spend a lot of $ and end up frustrated.

I would like to see this also. Is the blower you purchased for a skid steer by chance? CJ

Check out one of these pumps, SurplusCenter.com has several different sizes. Do you know what the motor is that runs this snowblower? What are the specs on it? How much GPM and PSI does it require? You might have to put a different hydraulic motor on it and match the motor and pump together. Make sure you use a large enough hydraulic reservoir to supply the pump so that the oil will cool properly.

Ok, a couple of options. Dynamic fluid power offers a 9.75CI pto pump rated at 2500psi. You could build a powerpack from that as long as you know what you are doing with reliefs and filtration. Otherwise you can buy a prefabbed unit from a supplier. There is no cheap way to do it right. From past experience 2500psi will move a lot of snow with these units, so you be the judge. Do you have enough pto HP to support 3000psi at 20GPM? If so and you want 100% out of the blower then go with a 3000psi unit. If you want to save a few $$$ and can do it, build one at 2500 psi. CJ

That pump is 1000 RPM PTO not 540 so unless your tractor has 1000, then it won't work. The one that Surplus Center has is 540.
