Straight or swirls?

I never think of youtube as a resource, but that is a terrific idea. Must be the "over 50" thing...

Hey now ! Easy on that over 50 thing , Some of us including me fit right in there LOL

From the terminology that you are using (somewhat incorrectly) I can tell that you could really benefit from some self education on welding. There are numerous online free resources, including weldingtipsandtricks.com and other places that not only show you how to weld, but also do a fair job of explaining correct terminology. With all the free information out there, there's really not much left to the imagination about welding.

As this was right after my post I think it might be directed to it. The title of the OP was "straight or swirls" so I was not trying to "jazz" or discourage with terminology.

I can tell you from making welds that have to pass x-ray, that NONE of the ones posted in the videos above would pass x-ray. You would need a gap and bevel for that to occur with the equipment and techniques he is using.

They may pass a dye penetrant test or if a simple fillet is specified but are not true fusion of the two parts.

Even the small inclusion he points out on the second set of methods, is nothing compaired to the 1/4" gap (that is what he said the material thickness was) between the two welds.

It looks like he just wants to see what he wants to see and not flawed use.

From 4:59 to 5:07 or so you can see that from his own cross section that pulling gave better penetration he just didn't have the torch aimed correctly, looks like close to twice the penetration in the upright section and he didn't put as much into the bottom.

Sounds like someone that wants to teach instead of learn.

While I agree with your assessment of the welds shown, I think you missed the point he was making.

I think he was showing the effect of different manipulation would make on the weld. He did state while making the first weld that the machine was set too cold, he kept the same settings to be fair on the rest of the welds.

My first post was aimed at the OP. I had probably started the post before I read yours.

However, several things: Every body thinks they are a "better" expert than someone else on these forums here lately even when there is no call for it. Jody has done more and welded more at a higher level than most welder will ever in their life time and is superior in his welding related knowledge and skill. I don't have regular contact with him these days, but several things you should know about him as he doesn't talk much about it. 1) He has "retired" from welding with Delta. Not only was he a top level welder with them, he also was an instructor. 2) He also has done some "work" for Miller and other welding companies. I'll leave that comment at that. 3) Jody is about as humble as a fellow can be on a personal level, and learning is what he is about. In fact he is not ashamed to admit he doesn't know something, but I guarantee you he will work on it till he gets it. 4) Well respected welders in the field in all disciplines acknowledge his skill and expertise. 5) His "shooting" rig is often in the way and he is welding "around" a camera to get the shot...often he is welding as much by feel as by sight. 5) EVERY welder makes a less than perfect weld from time to time. In fact it's been said there is no such thing as a perfect weld 6) You missed the point of the video completely. 6) He does these videos to help people learn...not a thing wrong with that...and it's free and a valuable resource to beginners and professionals alike.

While I don't think Jody made a perfect weld there, the hundreds of other videos he has put out speak to his capability and ability as a welder in all disciplines. He conveyed his point and opinion very well. You may disagree, but when you make a post or two like this trying to degrade someone's capability and expertise that is so obviously qualified you loose your own credibility. I haven't seen any videos you've made or a helpful welding channel you established.

All I can say is wow. I don't understand where some folks are coming from on this welding forum. I appreciate Jody and others that generously offer their expertise. Why some need to get on their high horse is beyond me.👎

Yep. I noticed that too. If you want to see posters in hostile, even insulting, disagreement with each other, Welding is the forum to check out.

Yes. I haven't been able to quite figure that out. Perhaps welding fumes affect some people differently than others? I'm sure someone could obtain a government or university grant to research the subject...
Seriously, though I DO appreciate everyone's posts.
