Son was bush hogging & parked tractor in field, 7 days later I went to get tractor & found he had left the switch on.
Needless to say it was dead, very dead.
Could not get to it to jump, so I put battery out of my truck in it to start & drove to garage.
Cleaned & installed tractor battery (needed a little water) charged it (15 volts) & cleaned all contacts with a file & used a good battery contact grease.
Now tractor will not start (slow turn & a little click)
Think this battery is toast ? Or maybe solenoid ?
I'm gonna put the truck battery in to see if it starts better.

Seems pretty simple to me. If the tractor started with your truck battery and won't with the tractor battery it must be toast. Buy a new battery. Don't be so quick to blame son. Maybe someone else saw the tractor and decided to play around but couldn't get it started so they left the key on.

Thanks guys,
The charger I used has a load test for the battery & it did not show fail
If tractor starts with other battery, I'm thinking bad battery, but,
The 15.65 volt reading on the tractor battery has me thinking maybe a wire, but,
Tractor started fine until this happened

Son blamed switch on to my grandson, 4 years old, either no big deal

15.6 volts from a 12 volt battery that isn't connected to anything tells me you test equipment is suspect. It's pretty hard to get 14 volts from surface charge reading from a good battery directly off the charger. At any rate, measuring volts tells you and us little to nothing about a battery's condition. A load test is the definitive test.

Start the tractor again with your truck battery, then replace that old tractor battery.

RickB,
You are exactly right
I installed the tractor battery after charging, the charger I used has a needle gauge
Showed about 13.5v after about 3+ hours
I got the 15 +v reading from a handheld multi meter
Sorry for not giving all info

my old China Battery recovered using a trickle charger and the anti sulphate chemical in it 4 times from key being left on and once from the short to starter when the wire tire holding the hyd QD up broke and the QD dropped onto the starter SOl and fired it up...

It lasted a bit over 12 years out of that China Battery and EVERYONE said throw it into scrap heap and dont even put acid into it :) Good clean ground and HOT posts & cables kept free of sulphate corrosion will help. Keeping debris off top of battery and dry also keeps them from shorting & trickle short as junk builds up on top of them and small charge flows thru the dirt on top of it. I sued a good hose washing few times a year and a long handled toilet type brush with dawn soap on it to wash top off and rinse well, hit with compressed air to dry it off.

no need to guess!

same country that made that tractor makes 3$ VOM 's that are sold at harbor freight.. sometimes they are free even!

test bat volts during load ( starting ). if they drop past about 10.6 the bat is dead.

there are also wire would and carbon pile battery load testers if you have lots of machines to test.

startingf cost for a 100-150a unit is about 20$

Just realized former owner put smaller battery than original, but this tractor started easiest of all the tractors I've owned, winter or summer

I have a brand new deep cycle marine group 27 12v battery 715 ca 575 cca I could use ?
Would a marine battery create any problems ?

Starting batteries are not Marine batteries, and Marine batteries are not starter batteries. Marine batteries are made for small to medium loads for a long time, and starter batteries are made for huge loads for a very short time. The plate structure is different, and neither does well when put into service for the wrong application. Will it work?, yes, for a while.
