When replacing the headgasket, I noticed a small hole in one of the cylinders. See uploaded picture.
Anyone knows how I can get such a nice little hole in one cylinder? Is it supposed to be there? The engine does run fine... but maybe only on 2 cylinders...
Any advice and insight appreciated.

Bert

Proably came from electrlois not spelled correctly but it comes from not running correct coolant and bad grounds. the only fix is to replace liner or put in a sleeve.

Do you mean a hole in a cylinder (wall) ... or a hole in piston ?

They are different ...

The pic #1 shows a hole in the piston. Its like dead center too.

That's what I was suspecting ... if so, it's probably machined in there and isn't a hole but a cavity/depression/etc.

Thanks for all the input.

Yes, it is in the piston. Only in one of the three pistons... And yes, dead center.
I can't imagine that the engine would last if it was really a defect.
But what can the purpose of that little hole be? Anybody has seen such a thing before?

Is it really a hole?

Well the hole is at least 1/8" deep.
When I saw that, I got so disgusted that I thought the thing would never run anymore, so I just put it all back together and was ready to tow it to the dump if it didn't start. So I didn't investigate further.
But the tractor started relatively easily. Sometimes smoke comes out of the exhaust, but most of the time, it seems to run clean. It is still using a lot of coolant though, which was the main reason for me to replace the head gasket. But at least the exhaust is not spitting water anymore, and the crankcase breather is not blowing water either. Maybe it runs an other 20 years :)

Maybe the #1 piston was replaced at some point? It looks like your water intrusion was around #1 cylinder - did you check for cracks in head or block? This machine is of an age where it could have work done several times...
