John Deere 2350 tractor under powered PTO need info on hydraulics on this

I'm back and have a few photos to show you and perhaps you can educate me some, please.

It appears the log splitter is hydraulic powered from tractor rear remotes. If splitter valve is an open center valve it will cause the 2350's closed center hyd pump to run out of oil and cavitate. Long/short story the splitter needs a closed center valve or at least a CC conversion plug if the splitter valve will accept it to correctly operate on a JD 2350.

Valve being closed in photo has nothing to do with if valve is closed or open center.Here's a simple test to determine if valve is CC or OC. Does valve have ports marked in or pressure & out or return? If so remove out hose male quick coupler from hose attached to splitter valve return port. Aim hose in oil filler hole on rear of tractor. With splitter valve in neutral engage tractors hyd control valve with engine running to power splitter valve,if oil flows through splitter valve and out return hose the splitter valve is open center and it's wrong valve for the 2350.

Thanks Tx Jim, when my friend gets back from installing a window later on this afternoon I'll tell him about what you said, he'll know more about that. (and try that test).

We can at least say it has nothing to do with the PTO. Do the other hydraulics on the tractor work OK? HST? Front loader? 3-pt hitch? If so, I'd suspect the problem is in the splitter.

My friend was here a while ago and I read the posts to him and he also agrees that it is more likely with the splitter, but as it was getting near dark, we didn't drive to where the tractor is to try anything today, and he's away tomorrow (appointment). The front loader works great, so as you (s219) say it may be mostly a problem with the splitter. Any ideas on what we might try to remedy this? Other than the test that Tx Jim suggested.

Yes, I can all but guarantee that the valve on the splitter is "Open Center" and needs to be changed to "Closed Center". Its probably a "Brand" or "Energy" valve and can be converted easily with the proper plug installed. The manual for the splitter (if he has it) will tell how.

Ok,, my question goes back to page one. In an early post jgns1 mentioned that last October the splitter worked well. Was it connected to this same 2350 tractor at that time ??

To DrBill, yes to your question...it worked well then (last October) when the Tractor rpm was revved higher. Now revving up the tractor yields no results....same JD 2350
