You really got to watch it around those tow chains, hooks and cables. If I'm winching something up on the trailer I tell anybody that's near to stand back. I was winching a truck onto my dad's trailer one day and the cable snapped and barely missed my dad who was standing there watching the truck for clearance of the trailer fenders.

After that he stands clear back. I'm glad he didn't get hurt or killed when the cable snapped.

A lot of questions here. Was it chain, or steel cable (wire rope) or fiber rope or a strap? Fiber rope, especially nylon, or a strap would certainly "snap back" . Chain or wire rope, less so.

And to go through the side window, where they trying to move this truck sideways?

Go to YouTube and search for oil rig anchor chain. Chains and cables are not as springy as a strap, but just as deadly.

There is room for all kinds of speculation and he shouda , coulda stuff but this isn't new technology ,several people a year are killed and injured doing tow jobs .When you start pulling stuck super bees with 5-600 hp things get stretched and when **** breaks loose people get killed .
Having said that I feel bad for his family and the people whom had to witness this and deal with the scene .

Such a sad thing and not that anything would have helped in this freak accident but here's some info taught to me years ago.

When I used to pull on chains a lot we took a couple extra precautions. When we pulled something out with a chain we always wrapped the chain UNDER the axle first and then hooked it. The idea was that the chain would/should snap down in that case and hit the ground first if it broke. I never had one break to test this out but that's what the old timers told me.

As well, we laid a piece of chain near the end of the taut chain on the theory the weight would cause the chain to wrap around itself harmlessly if it broke. Again, taught to me by the old timers. I could see wrapping a piece of chain over a strap.

Thanks for passing that on. Hopefully I remember that when the time comes.

Thread pruned.
A man died here. Nowhere did any article mention a weld breaking.
