Great pictures I really enjoyed them. Happy birthday btw.

thanks,

I go thru SW Pa a lot to go "home". Either take I68, North on I79, and W on I70, Or sometimes take Rt40 from MD thru Uniontown, then 51 up to I70.

Small world, I work right off of I-70 a few miles east of where 51 intersects and live about 25 miles east of there.

Great pics. It is good that the farm is still in tact. My family used to have a couple of farms too. My grandmother split her small farm up between the kids after my grandfather died. My dad still lives on part of it but he never farmed it. An aunt kept another part with the original house and buildings, and she still lives there. The rest has all been parceled off over the years for development. Back in the late 90's when land values were soaring my dad split 3 parcels from his share and sold them off so he could afford to retire. My aunt also split off a couple of pieces after she found out what it was selling for. The family moved there when my dad was 4, and my aunt was born there. He's now 83 and has just 8 acres left, and she has five. The rest is occupied by people in fancy houses that don't stop by to visit like neighbors.

Another farm was owned by my aunt and uncle. It was a second generation dairy operation that milked 100 head. I loved that place growing up. But the eighties were very tough on small dairy operations and they ended up losing the farm to years of low milk prices. I still like to drive by the place and look at it. Its a run down horse farm now, but I still see it like I did as a kid.

Old house / new house:

The farm came with this old house. 4 rooms, a Kitchen, living room, and 2 bedrooms. No indoor plumbing, so we got used to peeing off the porch. My oldest brothers and sister was born in the house.

Dad built our "new" house himself, which is what motivated me to build my own house. Only he started with a sawmill and cut his own lumber first.

About the only bought lumber in the house is the cedar siding.

House finished a couple yrs later. The well pump in front is where we get our drinking water. The rest of the water is cistern water. several yrs ago I put a submersible pump in this well, and the pump is gone.

19970426_0006.jpgWas just looking back at some pictures when I was building my house 18 yrs ago. This is one of my favorites. My dad is on top, helping install the shingles. It was soon after this he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He wasn't able to help me after, but he overcame the cancer and recently turned 91.

My niece was recently declared cancer free, for the 2nd time. Hope it stays away this time.

the recent thread about rebuilding a pond made me think about our farm pond. My dad had this pond built not too long after buying the farm. Here's a picture taken thru the trees a few weeks ago, and a couple taken before I was born. My grandfather is in the homemade boat, he died when I was 3 so I really never knew him. The other picture is my parents and grandmother, and 3 of my sisters, the oldest passed away a couple yrs ago. My dad is holding the fishing pole in the background. We built a dock in the pond, and used to fish it occasionally. My best memories was ice skating on the pond in the winter, used to play hockey with homemade hockey sticks. We had some skating parties, and would build a big bonfire on the bank to keep warm.

Farm Pond:

here's a picture not too long after the pond was built. On the hill behind the pond, dad built a picnic table, and we would have picnics overlooking the pond. One of the pics has me sitting in the middle.......
