Got lucky this morning.Scored on a 8pt.about 160lbs.(will weigh when I get some help).Took him with my old school .444 Marlin lever.I hadn't hunted with it in a while so decided the first week of rifle I would try it.
It's been a little slow with the deer movement but I think this coming cold front will get them on their feet.
Unfortunately I am done until late Muzzle-loader season.I hope to help the kids and grandkids get a crack at one.
Hunting during the week there is no one around;luckily I was able to drive the tractor right to the deer. No dragging.

Very nice buck!!!

My daughter in law shot a nice 8pt/183lbs. this morning..243 Accubond(my reloads) at about 120 yards.
The .243 is not my favorite deer cartridge but with the right bullets it will do the job.
Her husband(my son) left last night for Ohio, deer hunting!

We are fortunate to have all private land to hunt and can control it somewhat. We work at it year round with our food plots and clearing.Just last nite two deer jackers were caught in our area and ticketed.
It hasn't been too many years when we were happy to see a buck during the whole season.Twin fawns are the normal and triplets are not unheard of.

Here is a four point I shot the other Saturday small horns but big body weighted #150 50 yard shot with an AR15 chambered in 6.5 Grendel

Wow, you guys are really rocking it. Wife and I set our dates for our NY trip... weekend after next. Hoping this year is the year for a big buck.

On a side note, if you happen to see a blue F150 parked behind your house, with a small green tent pitched next to it.... don't be alarmed, I'll have breakfast ready at dawn

rifle season since RI does not allow it. I have a little lever action .357 mag that i like to carry since its so small and light. I know the laws have changed in respect to pistols but unsure if my little lever gun would now be banned for an out of stater like me. Any input would be appreciated.

This always struck me as so dumb. We can't carry a 30-30 lever but they allow rifled slugs that you can shoot into a teacup at 200 yds. It would be sweet to have one gun for deer and coyotes. Love lever actions.

I couldn't agree with you more.

My wife is from Upstate NY and she still cant wrap her head around this. "What makes your muzzle loader any safer... isn't it less accurate?" she'll say. Sure, ML's have gotten more accurate over time... but they still don't achieve the constancy of a center-fire rifle. Not to mention slug guns and MLs are super heavy. Who wants to stalk for hours dragging an anchor.

Every trip up to NY I go back and forth in my head on weather i should pop for a 30-30 or not. Sad, but the big factor stopping me is the fact that I can ONLY use it when punching holes in paper, and when we go upstate. 400-500$ for a couple weekends a year just doesn't set well.

Shift that 357 you have with a Hornady 125 JHP is a deer stopper in it's own right around a hundred yards give or take. What it lacks in velocity to the 30.30, is made up in frontal area size of the 357. Makes for a swell rifle in my mind (also a pretty good chainsaw) and surprised you cannot use the cartridge in a rifle upstate. You can always trade it and get half the price or more of the 30 at least. 357 lever is a very popular gun.
