Shift that 357 you have with a Hornady 125 JHP is a deer stopper in it's own right around a hundred yards give or take. What it lacks in velocity to the 30.30, is made up in frontal area size of the 357. Makes for a swell rifle in my mind (also a pretty good chainsaw) and surprised you cannot use the cartridge in a rifle upstate. You can always trade it and get half the price or more of the 30 at least. 357 lever is a very popular gun.

Hey Bud,

As of now the 357 is going to be my partner for the weekend. I'm trying to justify the cost of the 30-30 vs the usage it'll get. Just doesn't seem like a logical move right now.... but then again, what gun purchase has to be logical.

Just off the phone with DEP in NY after buying my license for the year. Surprised to see that they're no longer giving an option for the black bear tags... not sure if this is just for us non-residents or not. I'm confident shooting a whitetail with the 357 lever, but I'm not sure I'd even bother pointing that thing at a bear. I've seen a few bears up there but never had a shot.... Murphy's law will have a dozen bear pass me by if i carry the lighter load.

I'm going to try out the Hornady LeveRevoloution stuff this go around. 147g poly tip built for lever guns. Guys rave about these rounds.... guess we'll see. I'll be down at my club sighting in the 357 on Saturday. Our land up there is heavily wooded so a shot over 100y is rare...

$100 for a non-resident this year... ouch.

Great pics and stories. Up to a couple years ago, I hunted up in the Adirondacks (Long Lake) for about 18 years. Belonged to a camp and let my membership go. Hard to justify the high cost of a non-resident buck-only tag and only being able to hunt for 4-5 days each year. That was compounded by the fact that in all those years, I only got this one buck. Although the bucks may be far and few between, they are bigger compared to my hunting in CT. Beautiful country up there. Best to all for a successful season!

The Hornady poly ammo for lever guns is very good stuff. That's what I was shooting in my gun.I think you will find it hits a little higher than standard stuff.

Thanks! I had wondered about this and figured it best that i get out there and put 10-15 thru some paper before taking it to the field. I normally use the 158g soft tip stuff, so I expected some difference.

Always good to hear some positive feedback.

The wife signed off on the purchase of a new 30/30 for the trip... I have a sneaking suspicion it's because she has a secret love affair with this little 357 and wants it as her own.

Didn't you ever hear of the saying "never teach a woman to shoot"? Seriously, I think that is my favorite rifle. What are you scoping to buy?

I have my eyes on a new Marlin 336 in 30-30. I'm not normally an advocate for the big box stores but Dicks has them on sale for sub 400$. It's nothing fancy, no frills field gun.

My wife knew how to shoot long before i got my hands on her. Last Sunday she passed her hunting safety test, so she's got the bug. She's already got a list going... shotgun, muzzle loader, and my trusty 357. (More specific... Browning BPS Micro 20ga, CVA Optima V2 50cal, and the Puma 357).

Going thru the mail last night i see a handwritten envelope addressed to her. She has me open it hoping it's her license card.... ends up being a hand written note from the West Greenwich House of Rep Candidate (she won) thanking my wife for meeting with her when she was door to dooring. I had to smile when I read "Dear Joan, thank you for taking time from your day to meet with me. I understand your concerns with the possibility of losing our 2nd amendment rights... rest assured, if I'm elected.... bla bla bla". That's my gal.

Can't go wrong with the most all around gun in America in my mind. I am at a loss as to why this gun has not been allowed in this state for deer hunting. An over and under, this gun and my recurves would be all the hunting weaponry I'd ever need. Heck , we can't even use a center fire 22 caliber from Oct-Apr in this state. Ever hunt coyotes with a 22 magnum? Ain't pretty. Better off with a slug from a shotgun.

Only ever shot a coy once, and it was with a caliber that was much larger than was allowed by law. Speaking of coyotes.... we had a pretty big pack of them just off my property last night. Yippin and yowlin... sounded like they were congregated around a kill. Closest they've been to the property since we moved in.

I"m dumbfounded that they made it illegal to use buckshot in any/all hunting seasons in RI. All because a stray pellet hit something or someone.... what's next around here?

I've wanted a 30-30 for as long as i can remember. Just seems to be overlooked every time i end up in a gun shop... heh, guess I'm easily distracted. I'm sure the fact that we can't use them around here is a factor, but now with us making regular trips to NY there's more reason to spend the cash.

You're a recurve kinda guy eh? Why am I not surprised?

I haven't posted this pic yet because I'm still sick over not finding the buck right away. I killed him on October 4th with bow, but hit part of the shoulder blade and got very little penetration. I searched that night and the next day with no luck, then found him a week later. I was sure he was going to survive which made it worse. Anyway, here is the finished product, boiled, bleached and hanging on the living room wall.
