Western Pacific Bering Sea Storm

I'm sure there's some former fisherman reading these weather reports. I'm willin' to bet there's gonna be a few boats caught out there trying to run somewhere to get out of the heavy seas. Maybe behind a Island, I don't know. Not a good place to be in with this kind of weather coming thru. I hope they are able to ride it out. Been there, and NOT going back. bjr

Been there done that, loved it, protected the crab fleet in the Bering Sea in the 1970's, rescued some, towed some, ran the Russians, and others off our salmon and ground fishing. Seen every inch of the Alaska coast line, including the Aleutians. I still dream about nights at sea in Alaska. HS

I read that the current crab quota has already been met and the boats weren't fishing right now.

I spent three months out on the Bering. I never got my sea legs, I was always a light shade of green & the rest of the crew said we never had really bad wx. I sure hope all the boats find safe harbor - it looks like it will be a real mean one.

When I was up there we got caught in one that came down out of the Alaskan interior ... blew 75 knots ...

We quit fishing and the captain wouldn't allow anyone out on deck until it was over ... even out on the shelter deck.

If the winds were out of the interior to your north you were in the gulf, not the Bering Sea. That's ok rescued many who didn't have a clue were they were. HS

You seem to assume (wrongly) that "up there" necessarily means the Bering Sea ... rather than just a reference to the general area ...

A good example of seeing/reading into something, something that's not actually there ...

FWIW, that exact mechanism is actually the fundamental basis of self-delusion ...

Sorry, since the thread was about the Bering Sea, it was a fair assumption, and the difference is gigantic. HS
