Hi,

Please excuse in advance newbie questions. I have worked as a soldier for 22 years active duty and then 21 years as a policeman, but no real experiences with tractors. Now a student at a trade tech college learning skills to be a machinist apprentice. Like to start with information on restoring an old drill press I picked up at a garage sale.

I found this site surfing for info for the drill press. I found this thread started by "Iplayfarmer", http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/build-yourself/226293-new-me-drill-press.html

His drill press is the same as mine and reading the postings, learned a great deal abut my "new" old machine. So...please offer any info you have. To start, how do I replace and adjust the belts..or see if it is worn enough to be replaced. Followed by where to get a table for it...it was missing when I brought it.

Thanks!

Bob

Welcome to TBN from Ea WA. Belt adjust/replace - - on the back, right hand side is a small chrome handle. This will move the motor "swing arm" so you can remove the belt, or move the belt up/down on the pulleys, or check the belt. The pics of "Iplayfarmer"'s drill press reveals its just like mine. I have a Jet brand. I would guess you are going to have to contact the manufacturer, or check on Craig's list for a table.

Note - there is also a small plastic knob, near the chrome handle, that is a "lock knob" and must also be loosened to release the chrome handle.

Thanks! I will look at it in greater detail later this week...and look for that lock knob...that chrome handle and the tab lever next to it was encrusted in rust... it is now soaking in WD40 and will need scrubbing to loosen...

What is the model for your Jet? Swift Tools in Kent, WA carries repair parts for Jet. It is also supposed to be a Black and Decker...but the part slist I got off a previous posting shows the table is square, mounted on the main stand and the one Iplayfarmer have is round...mounted on another extension...like mine.

Please allow me to ping you as I learn more...right now, I don't know what I don't know...thanks again...in advance...

Maybe you can post to the original thread to revive it for further discussion. Others may have the same machine with more nuggets of info...and maybe a spare table...

Bob,

I went out and checked - here's the scoop - - Its a Jet, 17" swing, 5/8" capacity, Model # JDP-17MF. By the way, there is a "lock down" knob on each side of the press, in the rear. Which table do you need - the one that the entire press sits on or the one that ratchets up/down and that your work will sit on?

I need the one for the work, that goes up and down. The bracket has a hole 2½" in diameter and down a length approx. 3" for the table. It is also adjustable for angle. Still got lots of grim, crusted oil, and rust to clean off to see what I have. Will post pictures this weekend and ask better questions.

Using your info I managed to get a manual with a parts list. Looking like the Jet folks will sell one for $77 not including tax and shipping. That is going to bust my budget...hope to find a used serviceable one for a lot less. Have been checking our local Craigs List and eBay with no success. Maybe on your side of the mountains you have more folks with tools like mine.

You know - I can almost guarantee - you will have to either get that table from the manufacturer or if on a web site it will be the entire drill press. I've looked for stuff on sites like Craig's list, etc and there is mighty slim pickings over here. Us hicks over here are not that internet savvy. I think most stuff like that is sold at yard sales.
