3 pt tiller

Buy the heaviest tiller you can afford. (Lbs/foot of width) Also the tillers with six tines / spider leave a better job than four tines / spider. It's also why some tillers are cheaper than others.

I have a John Deere 660. It certainly was not the cheapest tiller available at the time. It has an 18" tine circle which is the main reason I didn't buy a new one when I bought a new tractor. I can rototill a garden that hasn't been cleaned up. In fact a lot of my customers don't clean up their gardens in the fall. In spring I just come in and bury it all with the tiller. Corn stalks and cucumber vines are not a problem.

Buy a tiller with forward and reverse rotation options like the Tarter brand. Ken Sweet

As a newbie forum member but an experienced tractor owner, I will throw my opinion out here too. I strongly agree with what pmsmechanic said here. Buy the best you can get. My experience has shown me that some tools can be bought cheaply and will serve you well. Other tools need to be procured in the best quality version you can find. A tiller falls into that group in my opinion. I would also recommend getting the biggest one available for your tractor. The walk behind will take care of the smaller places needing to be worked up. The bigger tiller might be a help if you decide to trade up in tractor sizes down the road. Not usual that any of us trades down in size. That's it in a few words. Get the best and biggest available for your tractor.
Stay safe out there..

Define best? I've put many many hours on my KK tiller between our garden and food plots with out a problem.

I agree. My 7' KK devours everything. It's made in the USA, and it's a beast. I have picked up some large rocks with it, which dent the cover. And that's another reason why I'm glad I didn't spend more on a fancy painted brand - I don't feel bad working it hard and getting some scars.

Actually easy to do since you asked.
The best one for you is determined by the metrics that only you have in your mind. What works for you and your circumstances? I cannot make that choice for you.

In my opinion, best is not only about price but also includes availability and serviceability and ease of use.
The bottom line question should be, will it do the job for which you want to do for the length of time you want to do it? If so, buy it. You have made the right choice for you. That is the best one for you. Not up to me to be happy or sad about your choice nor is that even relevant.

I do ten acres a year with my Bush Hog branded five ft.tiller.I have a lot of rocks and it just spits them out the back;it has a slip clutch and it is serviced every spring.Only way to go with large acreage.
I would suggest breaking the top soil with a plow or at least a middle buster before tilling a new area.
