Need advice on buying Yanmars

11 Acre's for me and about the same use with a Ym2000 for over 6yrs. The only thing I don't use anymore is a Tiller. Parts could be a problem even with the RS1400 so I let it go. Used it for a few Yrs. and only had to straighten out a few things that was found after I bought it. Sold it for what I gave for it in 2 days on CL. The Ym2000 was Purchased From Spalding ASIS and the only repair that almost kept it inoperable was the Starter had to be Rebuilt @ 75.00$ Local. I picked up a Ym 2500 from Spalding for my Church and basicly wouldn't swap my Ym2000 for it. The 2500 was a Fredricks Supplied refurb with only 4Eng.Hp. more or 1Hp. PTO that takes some getting use to selecting the Right Gear.
Steve is the only one that I see anymore selling Fred. Sup.Yanmars in Ga. that I know of. I believe the Place in Gainsville area quit selling Yanmars. I don't see anymore Real Deals UTDA. on CL. anymore for Months ?

Comparing the YM2000 vs. the YM2500 there is a bit of a jump.
YM2000 is 22Hp engine as a 2-cly lower torque
YM2500 is 30Hp engine as a 3-cly more torque

Both the YM2500 and the YM2610 are the identical tractor. The YM2610 just has the power shift. Tractordata.com shows the wrong Hp for the YM2500. I have a copied page from the original Japan spec sheet for both of these.

I would agree about the YM2500 shifting. I found it to be much like an old Ford 8N. That said, it's a pain to run the PTO implements and then needing to shift into a higher gear using the clutch. The PTO stops spinning. The YM2610 avoids much of that hassel making the PTO unaffected or live as a shift-on-the-go.

Interestingly, the YM2500 is the identical twin to the JD850. I had that previously in 2013. The 3T80 engine for all three of these tractors is very dependable.

The YM2000 is much like a JD650 my neighbor has. He has a FEL, but the tractor is shorter than the YM2500/YM2610, thus the lift range barely reaches over my head or into the bed of a pickup truck. It's still a great machine with the 2T80 engine. He gave me the mower that came with the tractor since the torque was not really ideal to drive it. The YM2610 just sings easily with it.

As for a tiller, too bad you were not closer. I've been looking around for one.

I already hit Carey up on the tiller...i was a few years late a year ago! haha

And look again the ym2000 is 24hp at the crank. The PTO is 20 yes. I promise, plenty here can post you an engine ID tag to confirm, "24HP@2400rpm" as the tag says. I would post a pic but my tractor is in the shed 3 hours from here.

And the 2500 is 5HP more than the ym2000. Just look at the names they designate the PTO HP on the Grey models.

YM2000 2-cylinder has huge torque at low and mid-range rpm. After all, it was originally designed to take the place of a water buffalo.

In contrast to this, my small 3-cylinder YM186D has a torque range like a B&S lawnmower - plenty of power after it reaches the upper half of the rpm range, but it doesn't feel like it was designed to pull hard below 1500 rpm. If YM2500 is similar with most of the power in the upper half of the rpm range, I can see why it might not feel like a significant improvement over YM2000. Particularly for getting moving at the start of each mowing pass, engaging the clutch at low rpm and muscling up to working rpm.

Just a thought ...

I can't confirm the torque issue but I agree with your thinking.

Comparing the YM2000 2-cly 2TR20 to a lower model YM186 3T72HA (aka YM1502 or YM1510) is not relative to a YM2500 at all. The YM2500 3T80 has more compression and larger cylinders (80mm diameter).

As for low ended torque, the 2-cly vs. 3-cly is hardly a comparison. The mower (John Deere 261) that was on the Yanmar 2T80 2-cly engine lacked enough torque that the 3T80 3-cly engine could handle. The difference of the 2T80 and the 3T80 is just that, 2-cly vs. the 3-cly. Both at the 80mm diameter cylinders and stroke. The more cylinders and equal stroke provides more torque under compression. I know the YM2500/YM2610 has plenty of low end as the mower can be started in either of the 4-PTO selections.

As for the YM2500 for the church, It should mow alright. Just when backing up or needing to move forward faster requires a clutch movement, thus the PTO has to pause and then powered up again. Sure this is a bit of a pain, but the Power-Shift (automatic like) is a life saver. Does your YM2000 have the Power-Shift? AND do you have the basic YM2000 or the YM2000A, YM2000B or YM2000D ??? I only ask because the YM2000B is an odd version. I have yet to confirm the engine type for it in my records.

I could talk more on this, BUT I have cookies in the oven that are almost ready to take out for the cooling racks.

Clearly YM186 is a tiny engine. But I was thinking more that it was intentionally designed to optimize output at the top end at the cost of sacrificing some low end grunt. From your description, I see that this profile doesn't apply to a 3 cylinder YM2500.

Aside from this YM186D where this characteristic is quite evident, I have a Subaru that has exactly the same feel. For fuel economy (I suppose) it shifts early and feels like it is always lugging, adequate but not impressive. The classic little old lady econobox. But these things win autocross races! How? Control the thing with the gearshift lever to stay in the 3500~6500 rpm range and its a completely different car, a real tiger. Torque is just beginning to climb at 3500 and it grows a lot stronger above that. The YM186D has that same feeling, that it was meant to be run in the upper half of its rpm range. It feels like it was designed in a later decade by a different design team - to coordinate with the capability that Powershift makes possible. With Powershift you don't need raw grunt at low speed to start the mower and the tires simultaneously. You can start them separately and at higher rpm than would feel right on a manual transmission.

I don't think any YM2000 ever had Powershift. That would be a YM2210, which has two more hp out of a same displacement and nearly identical 2 cylinder engine.

And I think YM2000B was just the upgrade option - plastic dash panel with more warning lights, better engine side shrouding (hopefully to reduce noise), maybe a four digit hour meter. Same 2TR20A engine. Those engine suffixes are all the same hp.

Ok, that's just my impression. Any more views on this?

I had a 1400 something series Yanmar it had four-wheel-drive and a front and loader. It was an awesome tractor but lacks the weight needed to do any real work. Sold it and bought a 1702 Yanmar. Was also four-wheel-drive and also had a loader one size up from the 1400. It weighed a considerable amount more had a touch more horsepower but was not that much larger in size. Still used for foot attachments and had to weight necessary to do what I wanted to do.

Cali is right. The power shifts all end in xx10 or xx20 one is a shifter on the dash and the other on the stering column if i remember right and not sure which is which. The ym2000 was never a powershift its a geared tractor. And He is right the 2000b is an upraded dash with things like a fuel light battery water light with icons and the hour meter is greated and the gauges more resemble automotive gauges, and is lit. It also does have a bit different shrouding on the front maybe for noise but makes it look more modern.

No YMXX00 Yanmar has powershift. The YM2000A and YM2000B are merely a YM2000 with upgrades. The YM2000D is a YM2000 with 4WD.
