Comparison Home Stand By Generators

Well if you bought quality eqpt. used, you might recoup the cost. And it's out there. Lots of folks buy quality eqpt that's un-needed and then have to sell it with low hours, at the going rate. Which the next guy gets all the value. Buying new, not likely to get the money back out. But if you got the satisfaction then that's OK I guess. That's along the lines of my motorcycles.:D

This excavator, I will assume made someone lots of money during its lifetime. If I bought it new (for my current usage - hobby) it would be a waste of money. USED, is OK,,,,, I think it will sell "as if I just borrowed it". That's always the hope, fingers crossed it doesn't break down,,,, Or have to drive it to town at 2.6 mph in Rabbit mode.

Being not able to get home during a storm . Or having seniors , women , children or klutz men that can not connect a portable generator. Given the cost of broken pipes and a flooded home . Or or a fridge and freezer full of thawed smelly food. The Auto start system just makes sense.

This topic always winds up with this type of debate/discussion because it depends on individual circumstances too much for any of us to make blanket statements on who needs what.

Meanwhile, we're up to 213 posts and the OP has never been heard from again. I'll have to remember this topic if I ever get bored and want to chum the water at TBN. :)

If you look at his post history, we may hear from him again in 2021. ;)

Yep funny about how conversations go. First post is a fairly specific request for info. People share mostly their own interests.

Really I just want something reliable if we lose power for a day or so. Propane would be easier for family if I were away. I will be having the Interlock installed soon.

Just a day of standby power probably covers 99% of folks (who even have a chance of creating/supplying their own power). At this point maybe he has heard all he needs to about whole house systems (or excavators:D).

I have a champion 3000/4000 and in process to put a interlock kit, this will cover my basic light , fridge, freezer and maybe some entertainement for the kids... I have a wood stove for the heat and working on a 12v pump for my shallow surface well.

I am far from home more than I a am actually home, but my dad and my brother are less than 1500 ft from my place if my wife need help with anything, and power outage are extremely rare around here.

And if I ended up with enough "spare" money in my budget, the 10-15K will go on a tractor or backhoe or excavator before a whole house back up genny...... But I am thinking to go the listeroid route eventually as a hobby / spare generator.

Put a power indicator light before the main.

Two possibles that likely would occur if anyone with a small generator ACCIDENTLY flipped on the main with the generator running while connected to the main panel in their home. The generator would most likely stall because it could not energize the distribution transformer. Another, if the generator could energize the transformer, the line crew dead short the lines from both directions prior to working on the damaged portion, again that would stall the offending generator.

This is what I was told my retired with 40 years lineman neighbor...

He said we NEVER assume any line is dead and we Dead Short to protect ourselves.

And if "the offending" generator DOES back feed the utility's transformer and energizes the line laying in your neighbor's yard BEFORE the crew gets there to dead short the line, your neighbor's kids are dead.

Live with that.

I don't know why you're quoting me on that.
