Reminder - Cost of Ownership of Gas vs Diesel

My first pickup had a Cummins 6BT5.9 in it. My current pickup has a 5.7L HEMI in it. Seems like the right choice for the times, unfortunately.

Uses more fuel & produces more CO2. Just to have lower NOx.

My last dually was a 454 TBI. My current dually is a 6.6 Duramax LLY. The 454 cost a LOT less to drive. The diesel gets around 8 mph loaded, 14 empty. The 454 got 7 loaded, 11 empty. The 454 went fast enough down the road. The diesel does have a lot more power and speed. However, my next dually will be a gas truck. I put about 9,000 miles a year on my dually, with over half of the time pulling a trailer.

I had a 454 in a early '80s 3/4 ton truck. That thing got 8mpg pretty much always. Loaded, empty, fast, slow, just 8. At least it was predictable. I can't imagine driving it daily in this day and age. It had 1 ton springs on it, as I recall, and E range tires that looked like slicks with two rain grooves. YIKES was that a harsh ride. But you could load it down and it just didn't care. I had to sell it when we had our first child because the floorboards were rotted out so bad that if you hit puddles too hard the carpet would fly up and you'd get water up your nose and on the ceiling! That, and straight pipes exiting under the cab made you deaf.... WHAT?? :cool2:

Just got my fuel invoice for the month and here are some numbers.

2012 Dodge cummins diesel 4wd - 2064 miles....average cost per mile for fuel = $0.27
2010 F250 - 5.4L gas 2wd - 1080 miles....average cost per mile for fuel = $0.22

This picture was taken about a week ago, and you can see the difference between gas and diesel at this store is only $0.37

They are similar, but you can never be exactly the same. The Dodge pulls a trailer more, but also has more 'highway' miles. The Ford pulls a trailer less, but also has more 'city' driving.

Yes, its hard to track that stuff exact. I wish the price of diesel was that price here, its like $3.60 a gallon, with gas being about the same price as in your pic.

I own two 2015 4x4 crew cab F-250's. One has a 6.2 gas and the other has the 6.7 power stroke. Both have within 3000 miles of each other.

Empty the mpg is about the same on the two trucks. In this scenario the gas truck is cheaper because gas is $1 less a gallon.

We just got back from a trip across three states where both trucks were traveling together. Same roads, same MPH, following each other. They both had trailers. The diesel had a trailer that weighs about 7k but has a lot of wind drag. The gas had a 10k trailer with a lot less wind drag. The gas truck would have to stop because it was showing less than 50 miles to empty and I still had over half a tank in the diesel. We filled both trucks to the top at every fuel stop. At our last fuel stop the diesel took 16 gallons to fill it up and the gas took 31 gallons. Nearly twice as much fuel. It was similar numbers at every fuel stop. The gas truck was calling in we need fuel and the diesel still had half a tank. Gas ain't half the price of diesel. If you tow a lot the diesel can make financial sense. I know they cost 10k more to buy than the gas as I just bought two of them but you recoup the bulk of that when you sell them.
