Firewood storage

I'm planning on building a firewood bin for the garage. Thinking of putting it on wheels so that I can move it around as needed. Maybe make a couple shelves in it for kindling and newspaper. Not sure how big I want to build it yet, maybe a half or full face cord? Wood is used for supplement heating. Would like to see pics of how others store their firewood!

Probably not what your looking for, but this is how I store my firewood.
Put the forks on and swap out the tote bins when needed.

I like the concept. I was thinking of putting fork openings in it too. Makes it nice for reloading

Mine is all in the basement. All 20 face cords of it. Wood is my primary heat. The oil furnace is only for when I go out all day.

But if memory serves me right, those tote things are 250 gallons. That is equal to ~36 cu ft. Or about 1/4 of a cord. Average hardwood is 3200-3600#/cord dry. So if packed tight, should weigh 800-900# loaded.

not sure how much wood I will be burning yet. I'm just planning on supplementing, probably just weekends and a couple evenings during the week.

Just make sure that you store the wood so that mice cannot nest in the stack.

For a year or so, I used wood pallets to stack firewood. I would stack the firewood near where the tree fell and tarp it to keep the wood dry. Our back porch has a large roof overhang and I place the pallet of wood under the roof overhang. This was great since the wood was mostly out of the weather and it was easy to get a load of wood for the wood stove without getting wet if it was raining or snowing. The problem was mice.

Mice would nest in the wood, either before I moved the pallets, and/or afterwards. They would then hang out next to the back door to the house and eventually sneak inside when we went on to the back porch. It took weeks to clean up the mess they made and years afterwards I found dog food they mice had hidden in the clothes washer.

I no longer "palletize" the firewood. I stack firewood in various places and then bring it to the house in a big wheel barrow that has enough wood to burn for 1/2 or a full week depending on the cold.

Our firewood is stacked about 50-75 yards from the house.

I'll put enough wood in the Gator's bed for a week (depending on how cold it gets and other things). At most, there might be 1/10th of a cord in the house (attached garage) at any one time.

As dmccarty wrote....mice (and insects...spiders, especially) can be a problem.

I'm kind of like Roy. My stove is in the basement and I have a simple wooden rack outside the walkout door that holds less than 1/4 cord. The rest is in a wood shed away from the house and I bring the wood over in the tractor loader.
