As a child, I used to acquire old Zippo lighters in poor condition for next to nothing, and take them out back and shoot them with a .22. I would send them in with a ridiculous "testimonial" letter about how it saved my life or something like that. If you remember there were such letters published in Life magazine. I never got anything published, but I did get back a lot of new lighters.. Yes I know I was an bad child.

Now that's funny, thank you.

I forgot to mention that I have had Timex watches forever - this digital takes a 2016 battery that usually lasts 7 to 8 years

I've wondered how long a battery can last. I quit wearing a watch about 8 years ago and my old Timex is still lying on the dresser, still running, and even has the right time. But the day of the week and the day of the month quit working a long time ago. But like you, if I ever need a watch, it'll be a Timex.

How do you know when it's lunchtime? I know lots of folks just use their phone for a timepiece but I find my watch is always with me, not so with my phone.

I quit wearing expensive watches a few years ago. I did buy a Timex Ironman once and the watch was good but the plastic/rubber band just rotted away in less than a year so I just stick with the $10 Walmart specials now. I just pick up a cheap $10 digital watch with the largest numerals I can find. They light up at night so I can see the time without my glasses and usually last a year or two before I have them so scratched up that I just discard them and buy a new one.

I have big wrists, so the walmart specials don't fit my wrists except at the largest hole and then they flop around. I get the cheapish Timex Ironman for $25ish and they usually last 3-5 years

It's funny the title of this thread says there's no reputable companies anymore when it should say there's no reputable people anymore when it reads more about people taking advantage of warranties rather than warranties taking advantage of people. I mean really if you find a lighter in the street ran over is that the company's duty to replace? Or if you break a knife opening a steel can? When is it time for the consumer to buck up? We all make mistakes and break stuff but claiming a warranty when something would clearly be your own fault so you don't have to shell out 20 to 50 bucks or whatever seems wrong to me.

Well you have to understand, I would not send in a Zippo lighter I had just put a bullet hole through now. I was just a stupid kid, and thoughts of taking advantage of a company way back east in Bradford Pennsylvania did not enter my head. I did grow up, and the sense of right and wrong sorted itself out. But I can tell you this, I remember tearing into the packages with glee that the Zippo Manufacturing Company in Branford Pa. sent me back just like it was yesterday, even though it was nearly 50 years ago.:D Heck those lighters even had brand new flints in them.. All I had to do was add some Ronsonol lighter fluid, and I was in business!

If the company didn't want to replace an item that has clearly been abused beyond normal wear and tear, they wouldn't. Companies that want to keep return customers will go the extra mile. The only story on here I don't agree with is the whole "lighter saved my life" bit. That's too close to the stolen valor stories I hear.

We have a Canon A1100IS that started having issues at the ~1 year mark (lens wouldn't open). Sent it in to Canon, they fixed it and sent it back at no charge ~3 weeks later.
Guess what brand we bought 4 years later when that camera finally started showing signs of kicking around in a diaper bag for 5 years?
A Canon PowerShot S110 which takes AMAZING pictures even in very low light.

I bought a Canon S1 when they firs came out. After five years the CCD was going bad. Dark pictures. I contacted Canon and they asked me to send them the camera (two years out of warranty). They rebuilt it and sent it back with an apology.
Still use that camera today for underwater photos. 10 years old and going strong.

My dad had a non water proof cheapo Timex that fell into the water in about 6-9 feet of water next to a boat dock. A few people jumped in to try and retrieve it, no luck. Fall, winter than spring went by, he was telling a friend exactly where it was, guy jumps in, first try comes up with it. Darn still running fine.

Next year the same thing happened with a Coleman lantern, darn was still lit.

Timex was a true story. ;)

Happy new year!!
