Walking

I agree with what most folks are saying. Seems to me walkers, joggers, etc. truly believe they have little to no responsibility for their safety and all of the responsibility is on the driver. I think its foolish but it happens a lot.

When ever somebody rides with me I jokingly tell them we have the right of way on a horse if somebody hits us. Makes them feel a whole lot better. But seriously I don't put myself out there at busy times and crowded places.

I would put money 10 to one on each pedestrian/motor vehicle accident involvement that one or both of the participants had ear buds or cell phone in use. I think nearly all walkers/ runners plug in an Ipod as the first activity which then limits their situational awareness to almost nil.
I am all for making laws to make using an Ipod (or other ear bud type of use) illegal when on a traffic street. It is bad enough if they are on a sidewalk or pedestrian/bicycle path.

Not walkers but we have Old Order Amish with their blacked out buggies and one little red lantern. After dark they are about invisible. We average about one a month being hit.

Its funny to find this thread today. I came extremely close to hitting a one of these morons last light. Very narrow two lane with traffic going both directions, wet roads so you're constantly cleaning the windshield. Then there was this idiot wearing head to toe black to include black hat running down the edge of the road. Don't know how he missed the mirror of my truck but luckily he did. During the day would be bad enough but this was about 6:30, well after dark.

I can honestly tell you I have NEVER had an incident with someone riding horses. All I have encountered have been more than conscience of safety for both themselves and any cars.

Can't say the same for joggers or bike riders.

Pedestrians and bikers assume that you can see them , stupid as it is .

There have been a couple of people killed jogging on the railroad tracks while wearing ear buds in the last 4-5 years in my area.

You would think they could have felt the vibration from the train even if they couldn't hear it coming.

Many cyclists and some pedestrians around here have bright, flashing LEDs that really help see them in poor light. Some also wear luminescent vests which really helps.

I'm fortunate to live on a quiet, deadend road so traffic isn't a problem. When I hear a vehicle I move to the opposite side of the road. That way they do not need to avoid me and can stay on their side of the road. My dog comes running and sits when I yell "car". If there is room (there are no actual shoulders) we stand(and she sits) off the road until they go by so they don't need to worry about the dog moving.

All on our road know us, but I felt guilty a few years ago when a logging truck would come up in the early morning. My dog and I could hear him coming up the steep grade and get over. But he would slow to a crawl going past us. It was very considerate but I would have liked to tell him he could keep his speed up.

All it would take is for the walker to wear a safety vest. I just about ran over the neighbour girl going for a run at night. It was too close for comfort.

Yep, a safety vest would be a huge improvement in safety! Today at work I just learned about a coworker whose father and brother up in New York were both killed two days after Christmas, while walking to a neighbors house. It happened at night, and the two men wen only about 50 ft from the driveway of the neighbors house where they were going. They were both wearing dark clothing, and walking out in the street a couple feet, instead of on the side of the road. The driver who hit them was a 60 yr old lady who stated that she didn't see them until she was right on them and couldn't stop in time. I don't think that there was any alcohol or drugs involved with any of the three parties. Just a very tragic event for all the families involved.
