F150 ecoboost drilled my intercooler

In defense of the Ecoboost I'll bet without looking that it is single-handedly the most numerous of any boosted engine in history, gas or diesel. So even if a tiny % of owners see problems that will still mean thousands of trucks.

I'm not going to say I know numbers, but you don't think Cummins has made a few more than the Eco-boost? I would bet there have been more 5.9 Cummins made several times over.

I looked it up, 2 million have gone in just Dodge trucks, which would include the 6.7 also. That doesn't include all the 5.9 engines that went in other applications such as other trucks, including Fords.

Looks like there were ~2 million 7.3L Powerstroke engines made for Ford by International (per: Navistar T444E engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) and it looks like there were at least 750k made for the MD truck market.

Pick-up trucks.com says that there were approx. 750,000 F-Series trucks sold in 2014. If you say that 30% of those are EcoBoost that would be about 225,000 EB engines in 2014 alone. If you extrapolate those numbers for the 4 model years since the engine came out you arrive at about 900,000 EcoBoost trucks running around. This does not include EB engines in the Explorer or transit.

So while my original statement was not entirely accurate in terms of total numbers the year over year numbers reflect that there are many more EB trucks of a particular year (example, all engines made in 2014) than any other example. I'm betting that the number of diesel engines sold in 3/4 ton and one ton plus trucks combined fall well short of the 3.5L Ecoboost.

PS....I think that within 5 years there could be more than 5 million EB engines running around. It will definitely be interesting to see how the 2.7 and AL body trucks fare.

After reading this I will look at the 5.0 liter engine verses the echo boost engine when it comes time to buy a new ford truck.

I don't see why you would worry? The numbers are the Ecoboost has been put in the F150 since 2011. Last year they sold 754,000 total trucks of which 57% are Ecoboost. That's a lot of Ecoboost engines out there and the problems are few and far between.

The 5.0 is a good motor also but nothing hold a candle to the Ecoboost.

The oily sheen may be caused if the EGR is on the intake of the turbos. So yes it would be an emissions issue, but not likely a huge one. I'd question how the system will work overtime with a constant "leak".

A benefit would be that the hole will relieve any EGR sludge build up though. No catch can needed. I recently opened up an intercooler off of an International truck and is was packed with sludge.

I still like the truck because
1st- it's a very nice truck
2nd- the truck has not stranded me - yet. It's worked even in spite of the problems
3rd- I like a paid for truck, they are my favorite kind
4th there is not another truck that really interests me if had to replace it.

I'm not a Ford man. I liked the truck and felt it was the best truck for our operation at the time. I have for the most part driven Chevy with a sprinkle of older Toyota. I am anxious to try the trick and see if it helps. It seems to be a better alternative than fords fix. If it does not work I have not lost anything, because the Full Race kit junks the cac. BUT if my wife decides she is tried of it and wants another one we will discard it to the highest bidder.

What specifically are your concerns? I have owned this truck more than 3 years and have no regrets. The 5.0 is also good but if you need the extra power, the ecoboost can't be beat.

Co worker has one not so great of gas mileage with his truck.I guess I am still old school proven V-8 motor.I have a 5.4 triton in my 2006 ford F150 super crew. Its a gas hog but has been very dependable so far.I hope the echo boost motor is a big winner for ford.

I will agree that mine doesn't get the mileage my window sticker says but it gets a lot better mileage than the 6.2 liter it replaced. Most would say that the 5.0 liter gets the exact same mileage numbers as the 3.5 ecoboost. Maybe the new 2.7 ecoboost would fit your requirements since you are interested in the 5.0. I would bet they have similar towing performance and it would do better on gas. As far as being proven, the 5.0 liter is the same vintage as the ecoboost but I understand your draw especially if you like a rumble out the exhaust.

Hey all..... 2013 F150 EB owner here. I've read thru (most) of this thread and I'm left wondering about this whole hole drilling thing.

Someone correct me if I'm mistaken, but it's my understanding that the inter-cooler is after the turbos but before the intake. Thus cooling the pressurized air before going into the engine. With that said, wouldn't drilling a hole after the pressure generating device LOWER the overall pressure at the intake? From what i know of turbos, the game is to create more pressure in the system vs less.... thus creating more power. The "tuner" guys are doubling and even tripling boost pressure in their engines, I cant imagine doing anything that would lower it.

So, from what i know of the system, this hole for water removal is also going to steal power thru-out the whole power curve.... correct?

I say all this having not had any sputter or power issues on my truck, so drilling anything isn't even a thought in my mind. Maybe I'm lucky, maybe i haven't had it long enough. As of today, i love my EB F150, it's a blast to drive and easily the most fuel economical truck I've ever owned.

At one point (when i first got the truck) I'd considered adding some sort of grill to the inter-cooler air dam. Partially for style, partially for protection from rock/road debris. Upon investigation i read that even the slightest reduction in air flow thru that air dam can steal power from the engine.... does anyone have any personal experience to support/defunk this?

Thanks guys....
