Thanks thats interesting! I am glad to find out they are easy to replace. Like I said my truck has 155,000 miles. After this I really could not understand buying another pickup with 2 wd. For my uses the 4wd is needed. I moved almost 5 years ago. The 4wd in this truck may allow me to get into deer hunting again!

Originally the 88-98s had a thermally activated front axle. Worked OK most of the time, sometimes if it were really cold it could take awhile to engage. Then other times if you had a bunch of snow packed around the front axle it wouldn't engage. I did an upgrade on my 97 to make it electrically operated. Made it much faster to engage. My 99 seems to be the electrical type engagement, it is pretty fast and never any issues with it, and I really like the Autotrac 4wd available in the 99+ 1500s.

If I remember correctly, It just took longer and longer for the 4wd to actually engage, especially when it was cold, and it got to the point it would not engage at all, and then I replaced the actuator module in the front differential.
