Sales Tax?? Out of State Purchase.

I bought a tractor out of my state and didn't really think to much about not paying the sales tax until a state tax representative came knocking on my door several years later with the tax bill and penalties. The reason it took so long to find me was the dealer had put down a wrong address , but they did eventually find out where I lived .They were quite good about it , if I paid the bill within 30 days they would deduct all penalties . Needless to say I paid the taxes .

If your town gets it onto their tax rolls as property to be taxed - most tractors in Maine are, then the sales tax will probably catch up with you. Good luck!

HEC Really? I always wondered if they ever track down big ticket items.

I am one of the three  Mainers who pays out of state sales tax as estimated on the Maine revenue tax return.

tcreeley does your town tax personal property? They don't here. I've never paid property tax on my tractor, just the normal sales tax when I bought it in state.

Pennsylvania requires you pay sales tax on out of state purchases such as internet purchases. There is a portion of the income tax form related to this.

I just pay my taxes, state and feds. I sleep well. We have run a business for years, the IRS did send us a letter once. It was a small amount of money, I owed it, I paid it. Life is too short to worry about little stuff. If you owe a couple of grand tax on a tractor, and can't afford it, maybe you can't afford the tractor to begin with?

I recently purchased a used boat from a private party in another state. I paid the tax when I transfered the title...but the state sent a letter to the previous owner asking the sales price......Seems they think I got too good of a deal.... What a bunch of misuse of public employees time and effort.

It used to be common in Texas for the buyer in private sales of boats, cars, etc. avoid the sales tax by either claiming it was a gift, or by giving a ridiculously low number as the sale amount. Do you think it's fair for dealers to collect and pay sales tax, but others not to? Of course now both the buyer and seller can be in trouble if it should be proven that they lied about the sale price.

What's not fair is paying sales tax on a used tractor that already was paid when new.

My thoughts are that computers keep much better track of things than the old file keeping system used 20+ years ago. I also suspect that those computer systems might have a way of automatically flagging something that doesn't seem right. Or, maybe a human flags it for further scrutiny down the road. I had a utility trailer built for me by a local trailer manufacturer. I got a title for it but declined to plate it since I wanted to use it on my property. Their system must have flagged it because a couple months later they claim I never registered it. So I had to send them a photo copy of the very title they had sent me a couple months earlier. I had a small go around with those folks about a year or two earlier and suspected I was flagged for the naughty list.

EXACTLY. If they collect sales tax when it's first purchased, and one year later you sell it and buy a new upgraded tractor, the Gov't expects the new owner to pay sales tax on his purchase of your tractor, and you to pay sales tax on your new tractor. It's not like they're gonna give you a credit to recapture the "unused" sales tax. It's more than double dipping. And if you're being all "I pay my taxes". Have you ever sold a used car and paid the tax on that "gain"? I didn't think so.

BTW Taxes are an artificial way for the Gov't to raise revenue. Fairness has NOTHING to do with it.

You have the same thing with cars, at least in Texas. I won't disagree with you about the fairness of the law. But if it is the law and some have to abide by it, then I think everyone should have to abide by it.

I live in NH and there is no sales tax on any items purchased. Prepared meals and hotel tax are different, they're on tourists. ;)

It's funny to see Mass. Folks who vote for lots of public services then come over the line buying big ticket items such as big TV's, furniture, tires etc. avoiding the tax that would help pay for those said services.

Be sure to obey the law and pay your taxes. The government needs the money to give all kinds of free stuff to millions of illegal aliens who broke the law to get here.
