I like starting a small pile on fire and burning as I clean up branches and debris. You can burn a huge pile one branch at a time this way.

So as frequently happens you may have been told by the local fire fighter "don't bother me" but you are SUPPOSED to get a permit for small burns and a "special permit" if it will "emcompass" (SIC) more than 5 acres.

Pursuant to G.S. 106-948, convictions of violating the Open Fire Laws of this permit is a class 3 misdemeanor. These penalties may be imposed in addition to any civil or criminal penalties sanctioned under G.S. 143-215.114B of Article 21B.

I have waited days for useless, moron, carpenters who promised to be at my home and never showed. They were not even volunteers but were actually getting paid! I have learned that as I get older I understand not everything goes as planed. JD I'm sure they didn't intend to not show up to inspect your pile but sometimes things just don't go the way we want. Not worth getting upset or upsetting the Firefighters you may someday need.

That doesn't seem to be the issue:
Yesterday I went to the local township hall and filled out a burning permit...and according to the guidelines on the permit, Quote: "Burning of any pile larger than 5'X5'X3' requires approval by the local fire chief or his designated" (sic)

The permit guidelines don't say the EPA or county council will approve the burn pile.

As evidenced by the posts in this thread, burning regulations differ across and within states. For example, NC has state-level statutes governing outdoor burning. Some counties and municipalities within the state impose additional regulations.

Let's see...

Leave work to get to station(leave full time job that pays the bills).
Get to station
Wait for other volunteers who had to drop work to respond
Gear up
Go out on call
Put fire out
Deal with landowner
And it was a state ordinance from Air Resources, who now have to be called.....
Finally, get back to station
Gear down
Clean up
Back to work hours later
Boss is not happy
I'm not happy
Wife not happy showing up late because had to finish work after being a hours on call
Kids missed Dad cause they are already in bed.
And pager goes off at 2am for CPR in progress.
