Diesel price

I would like to know why we pay more for diesel than gas. When I bought my 02 diesel truck it was always cheaper now it has been at times almost $1.00 higher. I thought when the wars slowed down it would drop because the military uses a lot of diesel but no dice.

The problem with Gasbuddy in Indiana is that prices for Diesel are seldom correct. GB Direct and others post prices without all taxes included and are not posting the actual pump prices. The actual prices are usually about .30 cents higher. You can't rely on this app in Indiana for Diesel prices. Diesel prices posted on signs at the station do not include all taxes for truckers and people do not look at the pump price.

The Gasbuddy prices are surely subject to reporting errors and are time sensitive. However, I use the mapping feature to look in the area I frequent...and the stations which I know typically have the lowest prices are regularly reported as such.

One time I saw an amazingly low price, drove a little beyond my usual range for a fill up. Station was there, price was posted on sign. However, station was changing hands and being remodeled, thus, needed to empty the tanks. So, rather than pull the fuel and transport elsewhere, they dropped the price and sure enough, emptied the tanks quickly.

Sadly, they were dry when I got there, but the price was correct as long as the tanks held out.

Will never be cheaper than gas again due to the low sulfur requirements.

So, we got crappy ethanol in our gas and no sulfur in our diesel. No shortage of fallout for the men in the trenches.

I've never found any of those gasbuddy type apps useful. They are less useful when prices are volatile because it depends on reporting and is more likely to be behind the times. But that's when you need it most.

Also these apps are even worse for premium gas grades, which are the ones that really need it posted as more and more stations are replacing their marquee signs that advertise all grades with ones that only advertise the price of regular.

k0ua, USA petroleum based fuel prices are way below what most people in the world pay. Off road diesel is about €1 a litre, 95 unleaded petrol about €1.30. I cannot remember on road diesel. I hesitate to give US$ equivalents due to the volatility of the € in the last couple of weeks, but I am sure you can work it out.

Diesel in UK is more expensive than petrol because it is much more polluting the govt is at last beginning to realise that most folks with big diesel burning vehicles use them for city school runs.

2.03 for regular gas
2.79 for diesel

I've never seen an off road pump anywhere.

Cheapest I'm seeing near me is $2.91, assuming on-road. Does one need to be tax exempt or have some sort of license/permit to buy off-road diesel?

No, anyone can buy off-road diesel but it's dyed and if you are caught with it in the tanks of an on-road vehicle, the fines are pretty heavy. They routinely check this at weigh stations and truck inspections. A few years ago the feds were dipping tanks in the parking lots at NASCAR races as well, they caught quite a few RV drivers using it.

Can diesel be stored for long periods or do you go through a lot? I know storing gas for long periods is not a good idea, especially in hot weather.

In my experience yes it can be stored for a longer amount of time than gas. I treat with an algicide and power service. I would have no issues not touching it for a year and then start pumping from it
