Looking good.

Are your walls going to be partially concrete or are you going to have that much fill? Maybe it just looks deep from the photos. I know you said something about having a storm shelter and I think I see that. Good call there.

Thank you for posting your build. It is quite an undertaking! Combining house and shop into a single building will work out great for you. Southern exposure for the house, with a view, will pay it's dividends in no time! If I understand well, your porch has a full footing and concrete wall? I am wondering if it would have been possible to build it with embeded posts only? You seem to have a good general contractor. Foundation prep and pouring took no time, and the job looks real good! Great start!!
I had considered just doing piers with a slab on grade for the porch but this way worked out better with the grade of the land. It also puts the porch even or slightly higher than the apron in front of the garage, which makes sense to me.

So far I haven't handed over the job to the GC. I wanted to make sure I had the guys that did my foundation and he was limited on time and by weather. We have a GC signed and he's going to start in late March or early April if everything works out.

Thanks. Unfortunately it will be a lot of full in the living space. The walls will be partially concrete in the shop area. I'm estimating about 130-150 yards of fill. At $9 per ton and 1.5tons per yard that's about $2k!

The storm shelter is the rectangular "vault" toward the center of the building. I also thought about putting it under the porch but ended up going this way. In hind site a basement in the living area might not have been too much more than the way I'm doing it. Oh well.

Grr. I have a bunch of pics to share on my phone but the app crashes after loading the second pic when I try to post them. Is there a better way of doing this that doesn't involve a desktop computer?

I'd say your lucky. My app has been doing that for the last few months. I posted the problem in the tech section and got no response.

Close up views from the center-front of the building looking over the porch, storm shelter, and garage area.

I'm a big fan of over engineering everything, but when it's my money, I always like to find the most cost effective way to get the job done. I keep wondering what the cost difference was to bringing in dirt to build up the pad and going with a standard slab compared to using concrete and rock fill?

Are the sleeves for the utilities above the outside grade? Will you bring in soil to build up the soil around the outside of the concrete? Do you have water and power to the site yet?

I'm enjoying the pictures and following your progress. It's always very interesting to me to see how others do things in different parts of the country.

Not sure on your first question. From my research I couldn't find anyone that builds that way around here. Yes the sleeves will be below grade after the surrounding fill is brought in. Right now they don't look like it I know. But The water and sewer will be about 2-2.5 feet below grade. The frost line in our area is 18". Yes I have water and power already. Thanks for watching!
