For some... lucky is the best way to describe it.

My god sister went to work for apple because she was looking for a summer job at age 16 and saw that this new company... called Apple was hiring... back in the late 70's...

Luck or Good Fortune... she never continued her education and has done phenomenally well working her summer High School job.

I know others that have worked for Bay Area start ups that have done very well too...

As for me... nearly 25 years on the job and the pension and benefits that attracted me are long gone... so even the best plans can have a snag...

Decided early on to invest in Rent Houses and it's been a lot of work that so far has paid off...

Guess if the choice is between lucky or smart... lucky would win.

It did not hurt to have Grandparents and parents that made the Great Depression real as a child growing up.

Unfortunately, not everyone that works hard gets a break and not everyone that gets a break has worked for it.

Very true! My wife and I worked at several jobs at once, worked hard, saved what we could and still couldn't save a buck toward retirement. Either you were offered health insurance or some cash instead.

With a family to support, there was no choice at all.

We always tried to land the good jobs, and even though I had a good skill set as a welder/fabricator, I never caught a break. The union halls weren't interested in me as an apprentice, and not until a friend helped us break into a great company did things start working out.

We are forever grateful to that person for helping us and were able to help our children get good educations.

In short, Sometimes a lucky break is just what some people need to get started. Since then, I went to college and got a degree, then I became a journeyman in a second trade.

I will always try to help anyone who shows the determination to succeed.

A nice retirement (hopefully) will come as a result of some smart investments, as well as good company benefits.

"Fortunate" would be a better word, the best laid financial plans can be ruined by health issues.

Finally, someone that gets it. If you have good health, you have the World. :)
