Some of us didn't. There was usually 1 or 2 drownings each year in the lake behind our house.

Maybe the Goverment should be sued for all the kids live in poverty because of the tax laws favor the rich. People are dying because of crime. What is more abusive. Tax laws or driving your child in a bucket.

Some people seem to not realize that a kid might fall out of a bucket for any reason and the first the driver might know about it is when the kid comes out from under the front wheel. If you're doing any speed, the kid will come out from under the rear wheel also.

Well, knowing what I know now, I wouldn't let my kid ride in a pickup truck bed down main st. to go to the Dairy Queen as we did back then. Why? Too many other people on the road compared to days past. Its too bad, as that was one of the great joys in life.

I know we used to let the kids walk around in our conversion van while driving through state parks looking at deer. Our little one was sitting in the center of the rear couch. Someone coming towards us swerved into our lane, I had to slam on the brakes and the little one flew off the couch right up the center isle and landed between the front seats and we were only going 15-20 mph. Had she been in the front seat, I'm sure she would have hit her face and head on the windshield. So, no more unbuckled rides since that day. It only takes a second to wish you had a lifetime back.

I believe that the story said that the driver had a suspended driver's license... so, driving on a public road with no license!

When my boys were in little league, returning from a night game, a pickup driven by parents with the star pitcher in pickup bed turned over. We visited him in the hospital.

Here in Kansas it is illegal to have anyone in the bed of a truck or any place they are not wearing a seat belt

Here in BC it is illegal to have a child in the front seat of a vehicle (seat belted or not unless there is an airbag deactivater). They must be in the back seat with seat belts and shoulder harnesses in place. Yet every day I pick up my grandkids from the school bus stop and they do NOT have to wear seat belts in the school bus (there aren't any seat belts in there). If I get caught driving them without seat belts in place I will get a hefty fine. But if you put 50 kids in a school bus they don't need to be restrained?

Well I guess there are a lot of 14-15 y.o. kids around me that need to be arrested for driving a TRACTOR on the public roadway. In fact I know a guy that lost his license something like 20 years ago for a DUI that does a lot of work for local farmers.

As far as the rest of the story, driving with kids in bucket-stupid! No lights or signs- stupid! As far as the road goes, I believe it only mentioned a 45 mph limit so not much can be assumed about it, but it seems that people are taking it as he was driving in traffic. There are 55 mph roads around me that you may see a car or two an hour. I wouldn't hesitate to get on them pulling a wagon full of kids for a short distance.

The same goes for private buses, the difference is a bus is built to have unrestrained passengers in it (padded seats backs, etc).
Even so, many school districts (such as ours) have installed seatbelts in their buses and they require that the kids use them.

I heard years ago that they had determined seatbelts more dangerous than not having them on a schoolbus. IIRC, kids would swing them and hit each other. Maybe it's not true, but it's what I heard.
