So I changed the air filter, oil and oil filter and thermostart. Now I can't get the 1300d to start. I just got the operators and service manual in from Hoye and I'm going to start reading them.

It's 30 degrees here. My starting technique is to turn on the fuel, put diesel in thermostart tank (before I changed TS it would use it all), turn key backwards for 10-15 sec then turn to start. For some reason it seemed like the throttle had to be in just the right place. But now I can get it to start. When I crank on it, it seems like it almost there, but when I left off the starter it just dies. I've also played with the decompress lever, but don't get much better results.

I'm trying to and I worry about too much, but it's kind of disappointing.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

After a short read thru the manual, sounds like everything I was doing was wrong...the guy that would it to me sure described things differently.

For example, I shouldn't be using the decom as a kill switch. Hope I haven't hurt anything.

I only use my decompression to start .not to kill engine.. the way I start mine... Pull decomp. spin engine over until oil light goes out.. With the starter still spinning the engine over & throttle pulled back, I push in the decomp. lever and the tractor starts.. changing the oil should have no affect on starting

You haven't hurt anything, that simply isn't the recommended way to shut it down.

Listen to Kenmac. Pre-heat using the Thermostart. Then spin with compression released and keep cranking when you drop the decompression lever so the inertia of the spinning flywheel assists the power of the starter.

If you don't feel the starter working against compression after you drop the decomp lever, then you might have a problem of a damaged decomp system or low compression.

At 30 degrees these older Yanmars may need a little creativity to get started if the compression isn't as good as when new. You could warm the engine with a light bulb underneath for a half hour, or warm the side of the head with a hair dryer. The idea is to make it think its a nice warm day.

On my larger 2-cylinder YM240 I replaced a lazy starter with one that has same dimensions but specc'd for a larger 4 cylinder Yanmar. This cranks frantically and starts instantly. You might investigate a rebuilt or replacement starter if yours continues to be a problem.

Condition of engine has a lot to do with how they crank. A good tight engine will crank with the throttle in idle position. A worn one might require the throttle to be open. The Yanmar manuals instruct to open the throttle wide while cranking and move it back quickly to a lower speed once it starts.

Have you felt of the intake area at the thermostart element after engaging it since replacing the element? Just to make sure the element is primed and working. It should feed warm right around it. If not, it might not be primed.

Did you see this on the Hoye site SHOP NOTE:
THE NEW GLOW PLUG WILL NEED TO BE CYCLES 10-20 TIMES TO BLEED THE AIR OUT OF THE FUEL LINE BEFORE IT WILL START BURNING THE DIESEL. CYCLE IT ON 10 SECONDS THEN WAIT 20 SECONDS, ON 10 SECONDS, OFF 30.... 10 TO 20 TIMES.

If it ran before with the TS. pouring fuel in. I don't think you have a compression problem. Cycle the TS. 10 times never had to do that with mine. Something just don't sound right with that. My TS like I stated before isn't even hooked up to the day. And stays that way. With all my injurys I don't even think about getting it out unless it's at least 45Deg. And If it's a lower Temp. then that. only if I have to. I stick my TS Bulbs fuel line in the tank and give it a squeeze to get fuel in it and hook it up. Works first time every time. May stay removed Yrs. at a time. Remove your Air filter Cover. If you don't see smoke. It's Not Working. Check and make sure that you have power to it. Mine Didn't and you can see the blue wire that I ran to the Ing. switch. I only turn my Throttle Handle on about 1/4 the way so when it starts It only runs about 1500 RPM's. Also with it being cold 30deg. that Battery better be a good one with a full charge. Your need one to get it turning over fast enough. And use that TS. 10 Times. If that battery not new your killing it with the TS.. It will start without the TS. we Know that. IMO. Battery! Like I said A week ago. :rainbow: :heart::heart::cloud9: Open the Decompression and when the Oil Light goes out let it go and it will start, with a good Battery. You've done Nothing that would change that. Except probably Draining you Battery with the TS..

The biggest problem with cold starting is low battery cold cranking amps. It loses 50% of power at 32*.

Could it be your diesel is somewhat gelled. In my neck of the woods 30 degrees is a heat wave this time of the year. As such even the diesel you buy from the gas station is treated with anti-gelling agents. Where you are I'd be surprised. How long has it be 30?
