Why do people always stock up on bread and milk before a snowstorm?

Apparently needs are slightly different during a hurricane. According to this Hurricanes, Pop-Tarts, And Beer--8/23/2005 site while beer is still a prerequisite, strawberry pop tarts are #2.
This was the answer to the nightly trivia question on the radio a couple years ago... My first thought was "They still make those?"

I keep enough food on hand so that I could comfortably go 2 weeks... And still have enough to survive for two more.

One of the favorites in my area for hurricanes is something we call squirt cheese . Ya squirt it on crackers and pop a cold one .

My daughter is on an exchange trip to France. She asked the host teacher what to bring as gifts, and, no lie, she said, "You have cheese in spray cans - we love it!" Who knew? Second choice was Maple syrup and third was peanut butter.

You know, thinking about storms past, and others have mentioned, it seems like the weatherman predicts Armageddon the same day as our normal grocery shopping day more times than not. And then you look like just another sheep standing in line with the panic folks.

Lead in to my question, why are most prepper's fat out of shape slobs? Amusing they are preparing to survive the holocaust when they will be dead without their BP meds within the year.

While I think it's good to be prepared for temporary disasters my question is "If the (excrement) did hit the fan, would you really WANT to live that way?"

Yep, that's us. We're prepared for a couple weeks of power outage or flooding, whatever. But if it's TEOTWAWKI, we want to be at Ground Zero of the first strike.

Now, which aisle is the milk on, please?

Why bread and milk?
Probably because you only go out for those when down to last half a loaf and last 1/2 quart.
With a major storm event you know you are locked in for a few days and coffee is yuck w/o milk and or kids want cereals.
As to bread you only buy minimum consumption as you want fresh bread, and not 'day old'.

Today I buy 6 loaves at a time and freeze 5 mainly as I like local bakery and freezing does not change the taste or texture at all.
