On my 5240 I would add the sensor to the piping just before the cooler.
Best place is the transmission housing which is the hydraulic reservoir. You really want the temperature at the pump inlet - the pumps are the critical points. Oil entering the cooler will be the hottest if the system is designed right. What the hydraulic component suppliers are really looking for is the pump inlet temperature.
echo that. My L4600HST was getting much hotter than I'd ever seen it on the gauge in the past. I hadn't been paying close enough attention to how much crap there was in the radiator behind the screen and the back side of the oil cooler. As soon as I blew that out front and back with air, the temp dropped to 1/4 of the gauge and stayed there even after an hour of bushogging.There is an oil cooler in front of the lower 6-8 inches of the radiator on my L4240. I keep an eye on it because it can become clogged with chaff.
