I like Gladehounds idea of using the text message rather than having to stand close to her when asking about the possibility of a new tractor/atv/snowmobile, etc. It lessens the chance of a permanent injury. It also may give her a little time to feel guilty about saying no. I think I will try his technique on the next purchase.

The look of total shock and surprise was worth the ars chewing I got when I exclaimed to the wife I bought a tractor this past summer. Mind you she owes about 25K on that high falutin college degree that she just can't seem to hold a job with, I guess she thought she was marring up.

Long story short, I was an 8th grader, and I playfully slapped a really nice looking well developed senior girl on the gluteous maximus. She did not take kindly to that. Something like "why you little snot" or some such. And I found out senior girls can hit pretty hard.

Sort of related to this thread,...but not quite. My favorite uncle is hard working and very frugal. Also a man of few words, but what he says he means. He carries("takes" for those not familiar with Southern English) his wife Bess to the grocery every Friday. He drops her off to shop and he goes to the tractor dealership around the corner to "look" and he comes back in a hour or so to pick her up. This has been happening for most of the 31 years they've been married. On the ride back home he sometimes mentions a new tractor model they had on the lot or a nice looking used trade in they had. She always tells him he doesn't "need" a new tractor, no more is said. Well last Friday on the way to the grocery Uncle Wayne said he needed to stop at the bank for a second first. Then the same routine, drop off Bess at the IGA and over to the dealership, back to pick her up in a hour or so. After he loaded the groceries in the truck and got buckled in he said "Yea know they have a CaseIH C95 with a Cab and FWA in at the dealership." She replies as always, "But you don't need a new tractor." He replies, "32 years ago when I asked you to marry I didn't "need" you but I "wanted" you." .......They delivered his new tractor today.

Great story, Soggy Bottom.

I just brought a new tractor home today (with the wife's prior knowledge and blessing), so I sent her your story and thanked her for being so understanding about my purchases.

Uncle Wayne and Aunt Bess are fine people and are truly Kentucky originals.
