Internet in the Country

I have cable, with 25meg down and 5 meg up. It works well, can't complain. Not sure what it cost.. Would have to do some research.. Cable TV with some premium channels, 2 telephone lines and the internet for about $160 bucks a month. I am thinking if I remember correctly, the internet portion was about $80 of that.

We can't get DSL/Cable where we are. We were using the 4G hot spot for a while but were always going over the 10GB allowance. My wife has an internet business that she runs out of the house so between her and my daughters we needed to have unlimited data. We ended up having a T1 line installed. Speeds are about like DSL but it does stream movies well. Cost is about $130/mo.

I'm in the 'no DSL/Cable' crowd. I went with Exede.net. I'm not sure but they might be related to Wildblue? Seems to me, they had some other name before.

In general, I like it. I use their base 10gig subscription (2 years) and have rarely exceeded it.

My big gripe....they do not send me a bill. They auto-debit my credit card and I absolutely hate this. I actually sent them a check (I like to get 2-3 months ahead of billing so I can skip every now & then if need be)

Anyways, they actually sent the check BACK to me.

What they don't know (or care about) is I feel strongly enough that NOBODY has access to my accounts that I'm willing to terminate their contract when I can, just because of that issue.

I had for about 15 years dial-up with unlimited download/uploads but was it ever s l o w. I now have a Telus 4 G LTE mobile internet stick tied to a phone number in North Bay,ON. I can go almost anywhere in Ontario (that Telus serves) and get online with no long distance charges, but I am limited to 10 Gigs/month for $80.oo/mth, then the charge is $20.oo/gig. I regularly go over every month. Last months' bill was $253.oo and this past month will be about the same.

I get my internet same way I get TV - - satellite. Internet is HughesNet, TV is Dish, My only phone is seldom on cell phone, ha,ha.

When folks live out in the pucker weeds they usually say - "we live in the middle of nowhere" - - - Well, I live on the far side of nowhere.

At my farm we cannot get high speed from phone company. Too limited population to offer it and upgrade lines. For a few years we had wonderful cell service with Verizon. Then for whatever reason, they redirected the signal from our closest tower...9 miles. Now we have occasional LTE and 3G but it constantly goes in and out even dropping to no service. Like many rural areas, we get ignored and passed over on technology unless it is required by government. I feel really bad for the rural kids who are being cheated out of equal access to technology. Verizon knows how bad it is but they couldn't care less.

Wooddust - - I have 5 or 6 different companies willing to provide satellite internet & TV service out here where I live. People must understand that cable or the phone company are not the only providers of internet & TV. Two of the companies definitely will provide internet & TV service where you live - - Dish or Direct. I have HughesNet for satellite internet service and Dish for satellite TV.

Exede satellite and netzero dial as back up for when the satellite goes off like during a storm or during heavy cloud cover or when too many people are on it from 6 to 9 pm.

Really dont understand why in the year 2015 some mega company or mega billionaire doesnt get the ball rolling on wiring up rural america for hi speed dependable, affordable internet service. Seems like there would be an amazing customer base for it.

In my area Windstream ran new upgraded lines, using government money (stimulus or similar program) but didn't bother to hook it all up. If you can make people pay $60 for crap, why other spending thousands of dollars tieing in new, better, that you still can only charge $60 for. They know they have us by the short and curlies, and they have virtually no competition.

Btw: not really in the middle of no where, on a paved road only about 6 miles from a major AT&T inter-office fiber along Sr20. I'm 10 minutes to closest red light, and 35 minutes from a town of 6000, a town of 12,000, and a town of 200,000, all in opposite directions.
