Murph, if I wasn't so busy I'd come out to Ohio and we'd take over. :)

California will be a tough one, Land of fruits and nuts. I like this states rights stuff but that ain't happening since 1800's.

Richard, I hear tell your heading to Alaska.

In my dreams Murph. But I'm working on it. I'll keep you posted.

Come on, I am waiting to get some feedback on Long Term Care here.

Yes - my wife and I took out a long-term care policy. It is combined with a life insurance benefit and our combined premium is about $160 mth. We felt, with parents that made it into their mid 90s, it might be prudent :) These policies do have their limitations ... something like 5 years total coverage.

Not in the hospitals I've been in...

Physicians make decisions about care. Most of the time, the physician has no idea what kind of insurance a patient has (or if they even have any). They do know that a big percentage of the time they/the hospital won't be payed for the care.

We all agree the system is broken.

I'd argue that the problem is that we all have the potential to really need medical care, and we're all already entitled to get whatever care we need, but that we're not covered equally by insurance so the financial ramifications are very different depending on who it is that gets sick.

The reality is that we already have universal health coverage because nobody can be turned away in an emergency. With that standard of care, treatment for the poor and uninsured is indirectly paid for by the rest of us. That's a really inefficient system. We could just give everybody the care they need from the beginning for less total money.

This matches my personal experience, exactly, for all family members I have experience with...6 including both my parents. All cases were handled with the wishes of the family being paramount...NOT anyone else.

I read a piece that had this statistic. Half or 50% of everyone's lifetime medical costs are spent in your last ten days of life. I wonder if people hoping for miracles or doctors not not being truthful in conveying the reality of situations, or distraught families not being able to face reality waste valuable medical dollars for impossible outcomes. HS

There is some truth that dying is medically expensive, but it's not that bad. Here is a link to a 2012 Money magazine story that says that 25% of Medicare costs are spent in the last year of life. That's just Medicare, not your pre-retirement medical costs and it's in the last year, not the last 10 days. I don't think that's out of line. You would expect to have the most expensive medical care in life threatening situations.

guys, guys....we're going to have to save it for the numbers thread...where the rest of the 3/2 of people can respond. :dance1:

Percentages are easier. 133% of people have difficulty with math.

You are right, I'm not responsible for your healthcare, and have no intention of paying for yours too. HS

You being a 30 year government employee, we paid your salary. So your money is our money and it should pay our healthcare.

Not that there is anything wrong with 30 year government employees.

Not so. You may have some input on "how much" a government employee earns - but - once someone is paid, that money is THEIRS. Taking it back through confiscatory taxation (redistribution of wealth, aka Marxism, aka Congressional Progressives) is theft.

Well then there is a heck of a lot of theft going on from the IRS and the state and my city. Bookem Danno!
