I moved from Virginia to Sacramento to be near my 94 year old father in law. The whole deal - driving, cooking, shopping, health care, - everything getting more complicated almost weekly. Good for you being supportive there.

We own some vacant farm land about 9 miles from our home. There is nothing out there within a mile each way, but three houses across the highway. The old lady that used to live in one of the houses was having a conversation with me. I mentioned it will be nice to move way out in the country here, some day in the future, to get away from the crime in the city. She told me her husband was mugged in their driveway a few years earlier.... :(

Apparently they watched him cash his paycheck at the grocery store, followed him home, lumped him on the head when he got out of the car, knocking him out. In there attempt to get his wallet, they ripped the seat of his pants off of him. She heard something, came out the door to see here unconscious husband face down in the driveway with his half his pants down. She thought he was dead. He ended up OK, but she said "Thugs have cars. You aren't safe anywhere." and that stuck with me since about 1990. :(

Same here moss.. Anymore, the country isn't much (if any) safer than the city . The THUGS are everywhere !

Sorry to hear about your mom's car..At least she wasn't hurt.

Here is one of the pictures of her car going down the line at NUMMI... I had written a letter to the President of Toyota and responded with an invitation to see her car being built... spent the entire day from bare shell to the first start going off the line...

As the car progressed... each line worker signed the underside with a sharpie.

Some had been there for years and said they had never before seen anyone allowed to sit in a moving car, let alone bring a camera into the plant.

One of the last thing Dad said was to go out and get mom a new Corolla... she went through a series of inexpensive used cars... one about every 10 to 15 years and Dad didn't want her to have any worries being on her own.

The plant really rolled out the Red Carpet and it was the first time Mom had smiled in years...

Dang, ultrarunner, what a frustrating day and situation!!

I, along with some care givers I was able to hire part time, was able to take care of both my parents in their final years. Mom died at 94, dad at 97, both after final illness of about a month or so. Lots of trips to doctors and to eat out at favorite restaurants.

Yes, things happen when it is least expected, as witnessed by numerous posts already. I forget this since lightening strikes infrequently for any one individual. But, I should remember more frequently. Couple of years ago I found a dead girl which was shot at a convenience store parking lot one night and dropped off in the middle of my ranch around 3AM one morning. I didn't see the car come in or leave. Had I done so, I likely would have accosted the perps. They are in jail now.

I need to be more careful as I go about daily activities.

I know you are on pins and needles now, having had both your workplace and mom hit by criminals. Hope the car is found unharmed and the perps put away. What a wonderful story about seeing it built!!!! It wasn't just a car, it was an adventure she recalled every time behind the wheel.

About sums it up... reminds her of Dad every time she was behind the wheel...

Sometimes I think I'm taking it harder than she is... she is still hopeful... me, not so much... I've seen hulks dumped on our land and it isn't pretty.

It really was a highlight for both of us... never would have thought a huge company like Toyota making many thousands of cars at that plant would ever do something like this... all we had to do was show the letter and we were green lighted all the way... they even had to pull the car to the side the night before at the last minute because production was running ahead of schedule...

Oil Changes, set of tires, battery and brake pads has been it... I doubt Mom would even consider one of the new space ship cars as she calls them...

One of her dear neighbors washes it every Sunday morning so it is spotless when she goes to church... he has been doing this since the first week she brought it home...

Thanks guys... she is reading these and said what a wonderful group I have at TBN!

Heartwarming to know Toyota did that. Really hope it is found OK.

Our family has been Toyota people for about 40 years. Have four in use right now. Three are in the bone pile behind the house as spare parts. All retired cars went far, far beyond expected mileage. Most neared 200,000 miles before engine or transmission went out, lasting 15 to 20+ years each.

We figured with 65k easy miles her car still had 130k good miles still to go...

Mom's never had a single insurance claim so this is all new... not sure how a pristine low mileage, one owner, California car is going to be valued by her insurance should it come to that... I have no claim experience either.

Insurance claim will be insult to injury. A 14 year old car is not going to book for very much. If you had to replace the car you would find it impossible for what they give you. I believe that the car is on the top 5 stolen models. Ford and Chevy trucks are also on the list. Hard to be thankful, but no damage to life or limb.

Tell your story to the local Newspaper ASAP. See if they'll do a human interest story. Maybe someone will remember the car.
