Can you turn to social media? Or do you not want a bunch of cooks calling you, as that can happen, too.

Several years ago, my mom and dad were at the mortuary for visitation. The chief of police here passed away. My dad was the retired chief and was 86 years old. The place was packed with policemen, and outside police were directing traffic. When mom went outside, she discovered her car stolen from the mortuary lot. What nerve!! Well the crackhead wreaked the car about a mile away. My dad along with half the police force drove to the accident site where the thief was still wasted in the drivers seat. My dad, who was old school, went up to the car window and and was about to administer some justice himself. Kinda funny, but a young officer had to hold him back. I thought he was going to punch the crook out. It was pretty funny, an 86 year old man ready to deliver some punishment.

Sorry about your moms loss. Hope someone is caught and punished!

REAL bad news about your Mom's car. I'm surprised the scum would steal a 2001 car.

<snip>
Maybe a topic for a new thread... those of you with elderly parent(s) that rely on you for that little extra help to be independant... how do you manage?

<snip>

I moved from Virginia to Sacramento to be near my 94 year old father in law. The whole deal - driving, cooking, shopping, health care, - everything getting more complicated almost weekly. Good for you being supportive there.

We are moving from Northern Virginia to Fulton, MS to be near SWMBO's 90 yr old mom. She still drives and is active and in great health for 90. My BIL, her son, is a Doctor and now maintains a general practice and residence about half a mile away from her. So for every little "health thing" she has occur, Dr. Mike takes a look in. An upset stomach warrants a doctor's visit.

In 2011 when we started moving in he was about 35 miles away so SWMBO wanted to be close to Mom. Now that Dr. Mike and family are virtually next door the pressure is off us to relocate.

Man, that is just sad to hear about your mom's car. It's hard to think about replacing an older car in great condition with low miles, because they are sort of irreplaceable when you think about the value and the cost to get something equivalent. Who knows, maybe it will be found. I agree with a previous comment -- the real insult will probably come from the insurance company.

It is an absolute shame that happened.. and the worst thing about it is that if the perp gets caught, he may get a slap on the wrist, " Oh you poor crackhead you need some counselling, Did you have a bad childhood??"
The time for that crap is over, Make them responsible for their crimes. It always seems to get overlooked, the victims end of things, the violation, the costs, the heartache.
Sure insurance "covers" things,,, usually only after a fight with them to replace what you have lost, but it is never the same.
Usually out here on the farm, if there is a coyote doing damage, it gets shot and hung on the fence to make the others aware of the local " conditions" word travels quickly amongst vermin.
I went through the same situation, Shop broken into two vehicles damaged as the idiots were trying to hotwire them,, so not only with ruining the ignitions, they flattened all the tires,, DUH well you would think with the ignition drilled out it would start with a key?? ANOTHER $2000.00 damage So they stole My new tractor ( 300 Hrs 60 HP Kioti) using a screwdriver drove it 40 miles of course as fast as it would go in 4x4 It was recovered a week later parked on a lot at a hall in a nearby city, The insurance Co. totalled it off.
The feeling of violation I felt when I went into My shop after it happened is hard to describe, Those vehicles weren't just trucks or jeeps. they were MY truck and Jeep. I worked and made the money and paid for them We all have pride of ownership, some more than others, but regardless, usually if it is parked in our driveway it is ours because we worked for it and take pride in it.

It may be wrong, but I am now a firm believer in the "coyote" type of justice, OR perhaps even better, the way they do it in Saudi, Chop their fricking hand off...... that way they are their own billboard showing everyone they are, or hopefully were a thief.

My rant for the day

Cheers

Roger

You guys are terrific and much appreciated.

Both of us could not sleeping last night... my brother working in MN called last night... he wants to take her out car shopping... too early I told him.

Just looked at the CSAA auto policy and her annual mileage is 2,000 miles per year for the last 5 years... premium of $974... really the little old lady that drives to church and the grocery store where everyone knows her... never a ticket or wreck in 60 years of driving... CSAA said it will be contacting her sometime Monday... offered the $25 a day car rental per her policy... she declined for now.

I did put out mass emails to friends and her friends that run at the nearby Lake Chabot... about a 100 in the running club that she was once most active.

Also thought about media... have a whole album and news story about her VIP status at the Toyota Factory.

I wouldn't even know where to find a similar car and it is too soon to go looking anyway... a new car at 2,000 miles a year hardly makes sense... 14 years ago she said her Corolla S was her last car so she wanted a good one...

Maybe we should treat car thieves like horse thieves back in the day... just ramblings on my part.

I wouldn't have a problem with that.

That really stinks but at least your mom is ok. Seems like many neighborhoods are changing - and not for the better.

Several have said the same...

I hate when old people are targeted... don't know if this is what happened or not...

One of my dear friends was a widow for many years... no children... kept a lovely landscaped home that was her pride and joy... some thug in the process of stealing her purse 10am on a Sunday morning leaving Walgreens broke her hip... she spend the next 3 years bedridden before passing.

My own Grandmother was followed home from a Long's drugs and accosted in her driveway... needed stitches... police said it was a tactic to follow old people home from shopping... fewer people around.

It's **** to get old...

It's **** to get old, especially in jurisdictions where the criminals know the population will be unarmed.
