You might be surprised with the insurance settlement. My dads 2001 silverado with 250,000 miles was totaled after I hit a deer. I wasn't sure what I was going to get for it, $1000 maybe $2000 at the most. Nope, they came back with a $3600 offer!! That's more then I could have sold the truck for probably.

Several have said the same...

I hate when old people are targeted... don't know if this is what happened or not...

One of my dear friends was a widow for many years... no children... kept a lovely landscaped home that was her pride and joy... some thug in the process of stealing her purse 10am on a Sunday morning leaving Walgreens broke her hip... she spend the next 3 years bedridden before passing.

My own Grandmother was followed home from a Long's drugs and accosted in her driveway... needed stitches... police said it was a tactic to follow old people home from shopping... fewer people around.

It's **** to get old...

I'm glad I don't live there....these things constantly happening would jade me.

You guys are terrific and much appreciated.

Both of us could not sleeping last night... my brother working in MN called last night... he wants to take her out car shopping... too early I told him.

Just looked at the CSAA auto policy and her annual mileage is 2,000 miles per year for the last 5 years... premium of $974... really the little old lady that drives to church and the grocery store where everyone knows her... never a ticket or wreck in 60 years of driving... CSAA said it will be contacting her sometime Monday... offered the $25 a day car rental per her policy... she declined for now.

I did put out mass emails to friends and her friends that run at the nearby Lake Chabot... about a 100 in the running club that she was once most active.

Also thought about media... have a whole album and news story about her VIP status at the Toyota Factory.

I wouldn't even know where to find a similar car and it is too soon to go looking anyway... a new car at 2,000 miles a year hardly makes sense... 14 years ago she said her Corolla S was her last car so she wanted a good one...

Maybe we should treat car thieves like horse thieves back in the day... just ramblings on my part.

I am glad she wasn't in the car and not hurt. My mom drove a 98 corolla for about 15 years, she upgraded to a 06 camry, then someone pulled out in front of her while she was doing about 30mph. Air bags deployed, she was bruised up a bunch, but I was glad she was in the bigger car (hitting a 1/2 ton truck). We got her a 2010 Impala for the same money she was paid for the Camry.

Been searching Craigslist and so far the 2001-2002 Corollas all have 200k miles and the 3 S models are range from $3500 to $4900.

Her's was ordered with the side air bag option which only a few thousand cars had per the folks at the factory... going newer would find this option more common or standard.

Seems very few cars get 41 mpg like she did on the trips to Tahoe... unless going new.

Also a lot of the new cars have CVT transmissions... anyone care to venture if CVT is as reliable as the old 4spd automatics?

whatever you do, don't get one with a 3 speed automatic. Motor revs like crazy on the highway leading to an early death. My mother's was a 3 speed. The motor burned excessive oil at 50,000 miles. Google it. I think the bad years was 98-2000 or so.

I am very sorry to hear this. There are certainly some depraved people out there.

There was a day (granted, not in my lifetime) when you could leave your car and house unlocked and nothing would happen, now you have to double lock everything and there is still a risk...

I will include your mother in my prayers tonight and hope that her car is found.

Sorry to hear that. I live in a very rural area, and there is still crime. In our area, it is usually a local person.

I agree, unfortunately they must have let our 'usual suspect' out of jail (probably on good behavior) as we have had a 1/2 dz break ins in the last couple of months, that after 3 years of of peace.
Shame is most of us pretty well know who he is (as do the LEO's) but absolute proof is needed.

Same with the chev prizm, though maybe more miles before the oil consumption was apparent.

Unable to get any law enforcement updates on weekends...

Did take her out to look at a few cars... nothing caught her eye...

Also spent a few hours searching online for 2001-02 Corollas... most have 150k+ in the mileage department and any that were within a 100 miles were between $4500 and $6500!... guess Corollas have good resale... her factory sticker was a little over 17k... and she paid $15,100 back in 2001.

That day was certainly in my lifetime. My parents never removed the key from the ignition in the car and they never locked a door to the house in Oklahoma and Texas. In the 1950s & early '60s, the guy who delivered Mobil gasoline in the Plano, TX, area filled his tank truck each evening to be ready to go the next morning. He then parked the truck behind our service station and left the key in the ignition every night. No one ever bothered it.
