Any downside to purchasing a Yanmar 336D?

Looking to purchase a 30-36hp tractor. going tomorrow to look at a 336D. anything to watch out for? the good and bads?

We need someone good with words to write up all the things to look for. Here are a few things. Go through all gears listening for any unusual noises. Use 4 wheel drive manking sure it works. Check brakes individually. Watch the crankcase vent for excess blow by. Unusual smoke. Steering slack? Watch the radiator over flow bottle insuring no constant stream of bubbles. Note fluid conditions and levels in 4 wheel drive, transmission and engine. Make sure 3 point picks up and holds. That's a few things to look for.

We don't have any idea what that tractor may or may not need.Minor or high dollar. None of us have even seen it from behind a computer screen. You have or are going to look at it...Like Winston said.. Check it out just like you would a used car,truck, etc,, Ask a specific question , and we'll try to give you a specific answer

I had one, a 336D. It lost it's front axle oil over time and made for an expensive repair. I'm the type that services my own stuff and pay a lot of attention to things, and leaks:laughing: but this one got by me. This was 15+ years ago and I don't remember the hours on the tractor when I lost the front end but I'm sure that there was never any (obvious) leaking.
There good tractors and I wish I still had it. I sold it when I got my new tractor and at the time, I thought 2 tractors was excessive. (stupid me). Bring a buddy along that has done some "wrenching", 2 set's of eye's are better than one.

Check for front spindle leaks,checkfluid level in front axle, jack up front end for play or unusual noises. Don't ask me how I know this. They are great tractors.:thumbsup: I have 2 of them.

They're great tractors. The thing to watch for on US Yanmars is neglected repairs and maintenance reflecting the US farmer's negligence.

After 30+ years each tractor can have its own quirks that you need remedy and bring back up to spec, to begin your own years of troublefree use. These are easy to maintain, no big deal.

If the steering has play, usually that can be fixed doing adjustments. My old JD850 had 6-inches of excessive play. It reminded me of an old Ford 8N. The JD850 (Yanmar YM2500/YM2610) could be adjusted to corrected for that issue.

Yes, the blow-by can be something to monitor.

Examine the fuel filter and notice and weeping around the filter seal.

Before starting the tractor up, pop the hood and squeeze the radiator hoses. If they feel soft, then they have aged and weakened from the inside. Look for any residue of diesel, glycol or oil anywhere on the tractor. Check the belts and gauges. Verify that the thermostart functions (cold temp heating for the fuel). Like others said, check the brakes. It you can check the 3-pt lift with an attachment to ensure it rises normally and lowers without getting hung up nor mowing too slowly. Look for any white foamy stuff in the oil pan or cap, and none either in the hydraulics.

OK I'm out of ideas otherwise at this moment.

Not sure what a YM336 would be in a gray Yanmar, but here is a snapshot of the US and NewZeeland manual. If you do get the tractor, get the original manual.

Funny how that didn't have ROPS back then for the US market. ROPS should be available from Fredricks easily for this YM336D.

I've had one for about6 years. It has a FEL, BH, Mower, Rake, and a snow blower. I use it weekly. Mine is an 1986. The only problem I have had is with the steering column. There are 4 bolts that fasten the base of column to the tractor. When people get on and of the machine they tend to use the steering wheel as a means of leveraging themselves up on to the machine. This can and does loosen the bolts. Once loose they will wear the threads in side and if not caught in time and tightened the threads will be damaged. It can be repaired but it is a PIA.

Other than that a great machine. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one. Parts for maintenance are readily available.

It does need the block heaters if your in a cold climate as I am. I'm talking Adirondak Mt. and temps well below 0.

mine has been good,

watch the spindles for leaks as stated, check the pinion seal as well, common problems, use the pwr shift, make sure it stays in gear when shifted...very reliable 3cyl yanmar diesel..

It's US spec so parts should be available. I bought a 276D seven years ago. It's been very reliable. The only parts that I've replaced are wear items. Battery, hoses, etc. Love the powershift and 4 range transmission. Mine doesn't have PS, but even at 68 years old, I'm able to work around that. Love that tractor. It punches above it's weight.

Those made for US YM models usually have much higher hours than a comperable gray market tractor.

My 3110 is a 336 a JD 950, It's also a JD 1050 without turbo I forgot to add the YM 3810 to the list.. it has turbo like the JD 1050

What engine type is in your 3110? I show a 3T84 or 3T84-D while the JD950 has the 3T90. Or are these the same engine really?

Mine is the 3T84-D engine.. Is the 950, 1050 & 3110 are the same bore & stroke ? I don't know. I do know I have ordered a few parts for my tractor from JD and we looked at the parts list for a 950

When I bought my 336D (new) I remember that one of the things that seperated it from the JD 1050 was that the YM had sleeve'd cyls and the JD did not. The other diff I remember was the 3sp/4? range "powershift" trans.

The 3T80 in the JD850/YM2500/YM2610/and other YMs of the 3T80 share many engine parts with the JD950 3T80. Wonder if the 3T84 has a mix of both the 3T80 and 3T90?
