how much to pull

When Deere came out with the 2240 one of its selling points was the swept back axle and the choice of a hydraulic hi low or direction reverser. It was promoted as a loader tractor in most of the literature back then. At the time my dad had an 8' Deere 100 disc 3 pt and while the 2240 could pull it and had enough traction it could not pull it fast enough to roll the dirt. Our 3020 diesel had no problems with the same disc, similar weights but more hp. Long story short my dad didn't buy it and I added an after market loader to my 4020 which I found cumbersome at best. Overall I think the 2240 is a good loader tractor for the time.

Jenkinsph: Your right it was a good loader tractor for the time, mine has the high/low.
I can also sypathise with the 4020 being an unhandy loader tractor, my uncle had one with a JD 48 loader and I felt it was just too big of a tractor to be a really handy loader setup.

While the 4020 is a great old tractor the front end is weak for loader work. Some what better is to put a 5020 front end under the 4020, I know people who have done that with success. I would prefer a loader on 4x4 tractors, better all around if you live on steep hills. My 110tlb does all my fel work right now and there are times I wish I had two fels but I don't think the newer 4520 fels are good enough for the money. I might get a larger 14k lb tractor with a larger fel trying to decide on that now

At any rate I really recommend you get a smaller disc that you know you can pull fast enough without problems. A good disc with 20" blades would be my choice as mentioned earlier.
