Drained out the old remaining lube, water was clear, no metal shavings, hope to have dodged a bullet. Was told to run diesel thru it before re-adding 80-90 GL 5 gear oil.

Not sure about wait time between these two things.

Also was told to check oil in hubs, but have yet to find a dipstick or drain plug that coincides with diagram from Ford New Holland. The bolt that looks most likely seems to to have too small an inlet to fill. Drain plug is confusing as well.

Thank you, it's a Sunday, so can't call my mechanic, and it's fixing to come a thunderboomer for a couple days. Hope to get this figured out before then.

Real quick, I think you want the GL-4 lube in the front axle gear boxes. Either way it must be safe for bronze parts (yellow metal).

Do a search of 1210's on this site. It has been discussed before and Soundguy is an expert.

It's been several years since I changed mine and I can't remember the details.

I also think you can use the Ford 134 fluid but the gear oil reduces the chance for leaks.

Pretty sure he recommended GL 5...Got somebody riled up already about using gear oil instead of 134, but for exactly the reasons you mention, that I forgot I heard along with wear and tear on bearings, the gear oil is recommended here in the south. Not too familiar with this site workings, but I'll try to find Soundguy's posts on the subject if they exist.

The factory recommendation is New Holland 134 hydraulic oil for the front axle. That's why I got 'all riled up' about your local "expert". RTFM and answer your questions.

Got a hold of my mechanic, he said with older tractors, the hydraulic 134 is not heavy enough and leaks ensue. That is why they go with the 80-90 GL5, twice the performance of GL4, and he has never seen any problems taking apart these axles resulting from GL5. They have a small amount of yellow metal, washers are dipped in bronze or copper, i forget which, but he says he has never even seen the coating on that worn away. When I looked at a pdf on the subject, they specify not using where large amount of yellow metal is used. My mechanica also said if that amount of yellow metal was affected it would not be enough to harm the axle as the coating is too thin.

Opinion not based on fact. Ford and later New Holland NEVER recommended GL4 in front axles, or GL5 for that matter. If the axle wants to leak oil, it will drip either. Good night!
