. . . After some consideration I choose to replace the belt and both hoses which were still apparently in good shape, but whose risk of premature failure was not worth my time of tearing the cooling system apart again
Wise decision. You should be through with the cooling system for years to come.

Here is a picture of the weep hole from the old pump. Is this incriminating enough? Is the stain from the coolant typical or is this an indicator of the failed shaft seal?

If it was dribbling from there, a shaft seal was going, and if a seal goes, the bearing ain't far behind..

I was just looking thru the photos and I see a issue with your throttle/governor linkage that will need to be repaired. There is a pivot pin that is lose in the housing that is allowing the lever to lay off to the side.
I tried to circle the issue in the photo.

Ironically after reading this post last week I'm currently in the process replacing a water pump on the identical tractor.

This is what your linkage should look like

Winmac- Could you please post two more images of this linkage. One from a 45 degree angle (i.e. move 45 degrees to your left relative to this image) and one from a 90 degree angle to this image? The additional views would be most helpful to me and my explain why I have always wondered why the governor acts so sluggishly on my tractor. Thanks.

Unfortunately the tractor is back together, 3hr start to finish, and that included hammering the sheet metal into something close to what it was.

Here is the second problem area in the governor linkage, I had to machine bushings to repair this a few years ago. The arm pivots on the large bolt behind the spring.
The big issue with the linkage is the pivot points seize up, causing issues.

tmac theres a rod that turns 90* and goes thru that linkage/arm thing. That 90* arm goes to the pivot bracket behind the spring in winmacs last pic. check all those for play/lost clips pins etc

Make sure you get the green stuff cleaned up before a dog or cat gets a chance to get into it.Friend I worked with swore his neighbor killed his dog. With antifreeze. He had been working on his own van that weekend and drained the coolant.
